Sebastian couldn’t possibly know that the woman had showed up unannounced and that Ambrose didn’t know who she was. He cleared his voice, then tried to sound casual: “Actually, she’s already settled in the Flower room, the one we keep ready in case of an impromptu visit.” ⇢
Sebastian was getting ready to leave to let the kitchen maid know and he hesitated on his step, looking at Ambrose with a dreadful thought of this woman possibly being his new female interest. “Of course, my lord. I’ll let one of the maids know. And to prepare one of the rooms.”

“Actually…” Ambrose hesitated and he finally stopped pacing, taking hold of the back of an armchair for support. “I don’t know how long she’s going to stay. Better let the staff know that our guest might stay for a few days… Maybe have a maid attend to her needs as well?”
He suppressed it, but very faintly he smirked for the briefest of moments, knowing there wasn’t anything Ambrose could tell him. “Very well. Will this guest stay for tea or dinner? If so, I’ll have to tell the kitchen maid to prepare enough for our guest.”

“Yes, yes, whatever,” Ambrose dismissed Sebastian’s excuse with a gesture of his hand that betrayed his annoyance. He wouldn’t admit it openly of course, but his butler had showed some good initiative. “We have a guest in the house,” he announced flatly.
The instant Sebastian heard his lord’s yelling he stood up straight and looked to the wall behind Ambrose. “Apologies, my lord. You weren’t around and I thought it would be a good idea to check how the new man working at the stables was doing.”

Ambrose was pacing restlessly in the living room despite his bad leg. How would he explain the presence of a perfect stranger in his house? Of course, as soon as he saw Sebastian, he barked at him: “Where have you been? Why is it that you’re never around when I need you most?”
He was now going back to the main house to see his lordship. The new guy, Jimmy, was nice. Although he couldn’t understand what he was doing working here with his master and not having a proper practice. If only he knew…

Since his lordship was busy, he took a bit of time to take care of his master’s horse. And maybe look at the new guy working at the stables… He was quite easy to look at. But of course he wouldn’t say it out loud.

Ambrose would look at the dress and admit it’s pretty nice, yet a little bland. She would need some nice jewellery to stand out from the rest of the crowd if she were attending a ball.
