Happy Independence Day our cousins in Jamaica.🇯🇲
DID YOU KNOW:
It was the Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey who came up with the blueprint for the Biafran flag.
The Biafran flag is based on the red, black & green UNIA flag that represents black unity, nationhood & wealth.
Our brother and a former attendee of the Okwu ID Uli workshop Emmanuel Uchenna, is using Uli inspired tattoo designs to bring ancient Igbo body art into the modern world.

A lot of what Nigerians think is our culture is moreso just "post-colonial orthodoxy".
Long male hair and tattooing are two very good examples.
Both of these were normal and widespread amongst Igbos before colonialism.

WHAT IS OMUGWO?
Omugwo is Igbo after birth care, when a mother/mother in law stays with the new mother to assist and allow for full recovery.
It was created because our ancestors understood that women need a robust support network after a life changing event like childbirth.
Bishop TD Jakes is Igbo.🙌🏿
He gives me strong Igbo elder vibes. You them uncles with the deep voices that always sit at the high table and if you don't greet them it's long.😆
Igbo is a very diverse language.
A good way of telling North Igbo (Anambra, Enugu etc) from Southern Igbo (Imo, Abia etc)
F = north
H = south
North: Ifeanyi, ifeoma, ifeyinwa
South: Iheanyi, iheoma, iheyinwa

There is great diversity among humanities belief systems. However some concepts appear in many cultures.
Through our "Archetypes" project we hope to educate on how human ideas can transcend national boundaries.
Skepta (who's maternal family is Igbo) represents his Igbo heritage wearing an Okpu-Ozo (red cap).
Skepta also sprinkles Igbo into his rap. "Tufiakwa" is an Igbo saying that roughly translates into "God forbid".

After the Biafran war Igbo people were given just £20 to rebuild their lives. Igbo women who had lost husbands and had their homes destroyed had to pull through to make things work.

Caribbean carnivals are a direct descendant of Igbo masquerades.
These are our people, who survived through some of the most violent inhumanity in recorded history.
And still maintained their Africanity.
Who taught you that anything that looks "too African" is demonic? 👀
Always found it interesting that 'Chi' in Igbo (i.e. 'life force/ personal spirit') is so similar in concept to: Ch'i or qi (氣), "energy force" in Eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea & Vietnam).
Chi is a Chinese word meaning aliveness, life force energy. or life breath -

A genetic ability to hum or sing in a nasally, vibrating voice, especially in a sentimental manner typically associated with Igbo people.

Podcasts, language classes, events, YouTube shows, blogs, panels, meetings. etc etc

Nnewi Museum (2020) Otolo, Nnewi
Although we visited whilst it was still under construction. It was great to see African inspired architectural themes.

IGBO KINGDOMS (vol 1)
(Arochukwu & Nri)
This infographic aims to give an introductory breakdown of two of the most prominent kingdoms in Igbo history.
(THREAD BELOW)
Eziokwu, for example "love" in Igbo is "Ifunanya". To say I love you is "a fụrụ m gị n'anya" meaning "I've seen you through/with my eyes" it's almost like saying I've observed, I recognise and appreciate you.
Same goes for Igbo. Our literal translations and the metaphors behind them are so cool because it has much more of a meaning/story/message. If you deadass translate it word for word back to English, it doesn’t hit the same or just doesn’t make sense.
A Happy Independence Day our cousins in Tanzania 🇹🇿
DID YOU KNOW:
Tanzania was the first nation in the world the recognise the independence of Biafra.
Under Julius Nyerere Tanzania took a humanist approach to the Biafran conflict, citing Nigeria's "rejection" of Igbos.
DEEP IT:
They don't care about human lives.
Over 2 MILLION people died during the Nigerian Civil war.
Backed by the UK government.
This same Buhari (a Cadet trained in Aldershot UK and the US Army War College) was a commander during the Biafran war...

Afrobeats was already popular by then.
The Azonto movement, Afroswing..etc
He legit jumped on a wave.
Biko, make a song in Igbo, will give props for that.

The Carriacou people perform the "Big Drum" dance to celebrate the ancestors of the 9 African nations brought to the island.
The Igbo are one of these nations
"Igbo Le Le" is sang by the Igbo nation of Carriacou.
ORIAKU = Consumer of wealth
Oriaku is one the most common titles Igbo men use to refer to their wives.
It is a reminder that a man's pride is his wife and that her maintenance is key in his role as a husband.

Our Name is Our Identity - Chinemelum
Oil was discovered by Shell+British Petroleum in 1956 colonial Nigeria, at Oloibiri (Niger Delta) after half a century of exploration.
During the Biafran war, Shell-BP quietly gave the Nigerian Gov £5.5 million for weapons.
At the time Shell-BP controlled 84% of Nigeria's oil.
Nigeria ranks in the top 20 oil producing countries in the world.
Yet the average citizen sees no benefit.
In fact, the exploitation of oil has caused stagnated growth, atrocious environmental damage and systematic corruption.
I hope our generation of Igbo youth....
• Just like young Igbos are dumping the false Igbo-Hebrew narrative.
• Just like the young Igbo generation are challenging colonial narratives against natural hair.
I also hope we dump English names en massse for our children.
You always have to examine your views and your instinctive reactions.
Why does anything indigenously African make you feel uneasy?
Where did that idea come from?
Queen idia mask/REMA isn’t demonic as a matter of fact she is a national hero to Nigerian & the benin kingdom
She lived in the 15th century
She was the first edo woman to go to war
She defeated a giant for a son to become king
She was the first queen mother in benin his
In Igbo culture there is an intrinsic understanding of genetic inheritance.
This concept is understood through "Iju ese" (marriage inquiry).
Before marriage both parties inquire about the other’s family background. Looking at health, fertility, divorce traces & family history.
There is a reason why you can sit down in the cinema to see the Avengers and watch a depiction of Thor for 3 hours, without feeling it compromises your Christianity.
But even the mention of "Amadioha" makes your skin crawl.
It's the racist demonisation of African spirituality.
