This is the current situation in SR 79 in Licking County. ODOT is assisting the City of Heath with this road closure. Road is closed north of James Parkway.
Did you know when you pass any vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road, it's the law to cautiously shift over one lane or slow down if changing lanes is not possible? Please be mindful of this when driving through a work zone this construction season.

The new Philo bridge in Duncan Falls is scheduled to open to traffic in October 2020. Over the weekend, Complete General Construction spent over 16 hours pouring more than 1250 cubic yards of concrete on the new bridge deck. Good work to all involved!

Winter is just around the corner and you may see District 5's Bill McAllister out pretreating our highways with salt brine. These tanker trucks hold 5,000 gallons of brine and can work as both a proactive measure before and during a snowstorm.

LICKING COUNTY: We are seeing significant flooding in the Utica area. Multiple routes are closed at this time due to high water. Remember to never drive in high water.

Headed into the next winter storm, ODOT has already used enough liquid deicer in Central Ohio to fill 3.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools and driven equivalent to 440 trips across the country.

MUSKINGUM COUNTY: I-70 EB is closed to traffic near mile marker 151 before downtown Zanesville due to a multi-vehicle crash. Motorists should use US 40 as an alternate route. Use extra caution if out on the roads due to freezing drizzle/slick spots.

Overnight, we will have more than 200 snow plows on duty in the Central Ohio region. The biggest concern is not accumulation, but icy conditions. That's because any precipitation is likely to freeze on contact since subsurface areas are frozen given the bitterly cold conditions.

Here you can see the difference between a non-pretreated lane and a lane of I-70 that has just been pretreated. Crews are preparing for winter weather anticipated to impact our area Saturday night into Sunday.

ODOT crews are pre-treating Central Ohio roads ahead of tonight's winter weather. Brine, a mixture of salt and water, helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement. We're expecting snow, rain, and sleet, so be sure to take it slow!
LICKING COUNTY: The EB off ramp from I-70 to I-79 is currently closed. The I-70 WB on ramp to I-79 is being closed due to flooding. We are monitoring this situation closely.
Conditions on I-70 in Licking County have definitely improved in the last 30 minutes or so. Snow is starting to taper off and traffic is moving at a steady pace.
I-70 FLOODING UPDATE: Both directions of I-70 are open to traffic! High water has receded. There are still various ramp closures at SR 79 due to high water.
3:30AM: Here's a look at two of our plow views in our more western counties. U.S. 33 in Fairfield County and SR 13 in Knox County are completely snow covered. The current conditions along with decreasing temperature will create hazardous road conditions this morning.
Tomorrow morning's commute looks like it could be a messy one. We will have more than 100 crews on duty, but we always want to remind motorists to give yourself plenty of extra travel time and take it slow!
I-70 FLOODING UPDATE: I-70 is closed in both directions at the SR 79 interchange. As water receded at SR 37, water covered both sides of I-70 just east near SR 79. Motorists should use US 40 as an alternate route.

I-70 FLOODING UPDATE: The EB lanes remain closed at SR 79 due to high water. We are currently letting truck traffic through WB, but the water is still too high for cars. Cars will continue to be detoured until the water goes down.

5:00 PM MONDAY: A mixture of freezing rain, sleet, and snow has moved into east central Ohio just ahead of the evening commute. With freezing temperatures, roads will be slick. Drivers are encouraged to stay home, if possible.

Snow covered I-70. This is what we are seeing on most of our routes. Crews expect to make progress now that the snow as slowed, however, blowing and drifting snow can make that difficult.
