On this day in 1987, IRA terrorists murdered 12 people in my home town who were attending a Remembrance Sunday service. Every day I work to help combat the horror and misery of violent extremism, I think of these people. #Enniskillen

RT @EliotWilson2: Telling piece by my friend @NotThatBigIan in the @spectator on the inescapable physicality of policing. Farage is a salooโฆ.

Nigel Farage said that thousands of new police officers will fill the streets, paid for by cancelled bat tunnels and wind farms.

The only way things improve is through embarrassment. If that is the metric of progress we now must live with, life expectancy in Fife is set to rocket. #sandiepeggie.

Cogent article by @HCH_Hill on Reform prisons - catchy name - and not just because I'm quoted in it.

Leadership.
Great from the new @NYorksPolice Chief. The former Chief refused to answer our FOIs on the basis that I was vexatious.

A now totally discredited and rigged attempt to introduce blasphemy laws by the back door. Rayner needs to kill this farcical and malign exercise. Anti Muslim hatred inciting/using violence is and should be a crime. Anything else is cynical, dangerous appeasement.
Excl @GBNEWS: The new government-backed Islamophobia group is linked to a foundation that slammed the counter-extremism programme.

It was great to be at University of Staffs yesterday to see young people, often the first in their families to go to Uni like I was, celebrating their achievements. Proud of @StaffsUniJSS !.

These proposals will get traction with the public. They would have been sneeringly dismissed by the criminal justice commentariat 18 months ago. No more. People are fed up with criminal impunity and legitimate concerns about migration traduced as bigotry. This plan isn't perfect.
'I don't think it's possible to reduce crime by 50% in five years'. Ian Acheson says the criminal justice system is 'in ruins' and wouldn't have the capacity to facilitate Reform UK's planned crackdown.

You can critique Reform's funding calculations but you better believe the announcements have emotional resonance with huge numbers of ordinary people who see their streets surrendered to low level crime and incivility. This is an inadequate response. Do better.
Reform are pretending to be tough on crime, meanwhile their newest MP let off a dangerous drunk driver last year and told her: โIt is what it is.โ. You couldnโt make it up.

Every part of the criminal justice system is failing. Public confidence at record low levels. Much of what's needed won't be solved by senior bureaucrats protected from any accountability. What you put into the front line and the leadership needed is key.
