Addressing the culture of #noise in one of America’s oldest cities. #Noisepollution is a #publichealth & #environmentaljustice issue. “Noise is the New Smoking”
Providence, RI

@ecoRInews @EnvCouncil_RI @providencezen @CapnBinz @Brown_SPH @nuestrasalud “The average level of #noise in urban environments has risen by .5–1 decibels per year over the past 30 years. As well as being a pain in the ear, excessive noise is directly linked to cardiovascular disease, anxiety, #depression, #hearingloss and impaired cognitive development.”.

“Beyond the nuisance to residents, we must also think of people in front of the [speakers]: At such a [volume] level, without hearing protection there’s a real risk of irreversible damage.”.— Resident on #noise at Brussels’ Open Air Festival @ProvidenceACT

Selon le comité Alhambra les basses résonnaient jusque sur le boulevard Émile Jacqmain, à plusieurs centaines de mètres de la scène situé place De Brouckère .

The federal government designated three railroad crossings in Florida’s St. Lucie County as official train-horn “quiet zones” two years after high-speed Brightline trains began service between Miami and Orlando, and as the number of daily trips is growing.

These three zones, which go into effect Sept. 1, are in the southern portion of St. Lucie County— Midway Road, Walton Road and Riverview Drive.

“City leaders framed the investment as supporting neighborhood quality of life. The … monitors will operate continuously, providing round-the-clock noise data that residents and officials can use to document disturbances.” The Noise Project also monitors #vehiclenoise. @PVDMayor.

Fully ONE QUARTER of the year — year after year — Cranston RI residents living near the @CranstonPolice gun range can be exposed to live gunfire #noise ALL DAY LONG and *as late as 8:00 p.m.* on two weekdays — all subject to the whims of the police. Who *actually* runs Cranston?.

From #noise activists in Cranston:. @CranstonPolice: “Beginning in August, the [gun] range may be in use EVERY DAY *through* October for training and firearms-qualification testing. On Tue and Thu the range may be in use until 8:00PM. Schedule [may] change based on needs of CPD.”.

@RIHEALTH @nuestrasalud @Brown_SPH @community_noise @noiseandthecity “The main objective was to measure the decibel level” of #vehiclenoise, which is the dominant source across most of the sound-level monitoring sites. “Occasionally we get other things like #leafblowers, yard equipment, people, construction #noise, music, [and] things like that.”.

@RIHEALTH @nuestrasalud @Brown_SPH @community_noise @noiseandthecity In terms of health, “we’re interested in … the pulsing nature of #noise, or what we call intermittency. We found that on main roads, noise was less intermittent but at a higher level. But a block or two off the main road, we found that noise was actually the most intermittent.”.

“Noisy people doing noisy things in public, disrupting others, is nothing new. ‘It just seems now there’s more opportunities for people to do so, because we all have technology that makes #noise’.”. Coupled with the technology is a sense of #entitlement.

More people in public places are foregoing headphones and loudly sharing their lives with everyone. But why?

London’s #publictransit agency launched a new campaign to urge people who play loud music or make phone calls using their device’s speaker to use headphones instead. The agency’s research found that 70% of riders it surveyed think music or calls on speakers are a #publicnuisance.

It’s important for @WPRI12 to report rigorously on who becomes Board of Licenses chair next, after @PVDMayor Smiley retained and then re-appointed Conley, whose public statements in support of the “night-time economy” led at minimum to the appearance of a conflict of interest. 🔬.
.@Dylan2DC, chairman of the Providence Board of Licenses, has submitted his resignation. Conley, 38, tells me that he wants to spend more time with his family. Has two kids. Has been on the board for almost nine years. His last day will be on Oct. 2.

@ProvidenceACT @RIHEALTH @PVDMayor “Some Indonesians posted screenshots online of apps registering loudspeaker sound levels as high as 130 decibels. Operators of loudspeaker towers argue they are responding to demand that generates revenue for local businesses.”. Without a bogus @CityofProv ‘Life at Night’ study?.

@ProvidenceACT “Loudspeakers have continued blasting above the new limits, due to lax enforcement by local authorities … The World Health Organization says sound at 85 decibels and above can cause hearing damage over time, and anything above 120 dB can cause immediate harm” @RIHealth @PVDMayor.

“The East Java government capped sound-system levels at 120 decibels, with mobile units used in parades or protests limited to 85 decibels. Mobile units are also banned from being used near schools, hospitals, ambulances, and places of worship that are in session.” @ProvidenceACT.

“Ear-splitting #noise has been shown to have adverse health consequences, including a higher risk of heart conditions for those exposed. Indonesia's loudspeaker towers, popular for [about] a decade, have had dire consequences for some who attend the deafening street gatherings.”.

The ‘horeg’ backlash forced officials in East Java to issue an order limiting sound levels and specifying the times and locations loudspeakers can be used. The order was issued "for health and security reasons. The #noise level must be regulated so it won’t disturb public peace.”.
