@ecoRInews @EnvCouncil_RI @providencezen @CapnBinz @Brown_SPH @nuestrasalud “The average level of #noise in urban environments has risen by .5–1 decibels per year over the past 30 years. As well as being a pain in the ear, excessive noise is directly linked to cardiovascular disease, anxiety, #depression, #hearingloss and impaired cognitive development.”.

“Beyond the nuisance to residents, we must also think of people in front of the [speakers]: At such a [volume] level, without hearing protection there’s a real risk of irreversible damage.”.— Resident on #noise at Brussels’ Open Air Festival @ProvidenceACT

Railroad-horn quiet-zones remain in force 24 hours a day, but trains are still allowed to sound their horns to provide external warnings — such as to vehicles / people / animals on or near tracks, maintenance operations within 25 feet of a passing train, or in an emergency.📢🛤️🤫.

Other Florida cities and counties — as well as numerous jurisdictions across the U.S. — have designated sections of railroads as horn quiet-zones, including the first in Palm Beach County, Florida, in July 2025 and six railroad-crossing quiet zones in Jupiter, FL, in August 2025.

“The increase of 32 passenger trains a day, in addition to an increase in freight, most of which run at night, has negatively impacted the quality of life for residents who live along the railroad” and near road crossings. “We hope the new quiet zones help residents rest easier.”.

The federal government designated three railroad crossings in Florida’s St. Lucie County as official train-horn “quiet zones” two years after high-speed Brightline trains began service between Miami and Orlando, and as the number of daily trips is growing.

@PVDMayor The article explains that the sound monitors will address “long-standing complaints” from Fort Worth residents about #noise and “establish baseline measurements [to] track changes over time” — precisely the same reason for the Noise Project sound monitors:

“City leaders framed the investment as supporting neighborhood quality of life. The … monitors will operate continuously, providing round-the-clock noise data that residents and officials can use to document disturbances.” The Noise Project also monitors #vehiclenoise. @PVDMayor.

Fully ONE QUARTER of the year — year after year — Cranston RI residents living near the @CranstonPolice gun range can be exposed to live gunfire #noise ALL DAY LONG and *as late as 8:00 p.m.* on two weekdays — all subject to the whims of the police. Who *actually* runs Cranston?.

@RIHEALTH @nuestrasalud @Brown_SPH @community_noise @noiseandthecity “The main objective was to measure the decibel level” of #vehiclenoise, which is the dominant source across most of the sound-level monitoring sites. “Occasionally we get other things like #leafblowers, yard equipment, people, construction #noise, music, [and] things like that.”.

@RIHEALTH @nuestrasalud @Brown_SPH @community_noise @noiseandthecity In terms of health, “we’re interested in … the pulsing nature of #noise, or what we call intermittency. We found that on main roads, noise was less intermittent but at a higher level. But a block or two off the main road, we found that noise was actually the most intermittent.”.

“Noisy people doing noisy things in public, disrupting others, is nothing new. ‘It just seems now there’s more opportunities for people to do so, because we all have technology that makes #noise’.”. Coupled with the technology is a sense of #entitlement.

It’s important for @WPRI12 to report rigorously on who becomes Board of Licenses chair next, after @PVDMayor Smiley retained and then re-appointed Conley, whose public statements in support of the “night-time economy” led at minimum to the appearance of a conflict of interest. 🔬.

The ‘horeg’ backlash forced officials in East Java to issue an order limiting sound levels and specifying the times and locations loudspeakers can be used. The order was issued "for health and security reasons. The #noise level must be regulated so it won’t disturb public peace.”.
