We're currently at the scene of a fire at Strensall Common. We are likely to be there for some time and ask that people avoid the area.

Be careful not to lose your footing on your waterside stroll or run. Riverbanks and coastal paths can be unstable after very dry or wet weather. Always stick to proper pathways and keep clear of the edge. If you’re in any doubt take a different route. #BeWaterAware

Did you know most accidental drownings in the UK occur in inland waterways like rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs, and quarries? Even calm-looking water can have strong currents, cold temperatures, and hidden dangers. #BeWaterAware

Don’t have campfires or barbecues in the countryside, instead look for safe designated areas. Small fires can quickly spread especially when the ground is dry. Park responsibly and make sure a fire engine or ambulance would be able to pass.

Stick to designated paths and always leave gates and property as you find them. Take your litter home, especially glass bottles and jars. Discard of smoking materials carefully. Never throw cigarette ends on the ground or out of car windows.

With the warmer weather returning this week, we'd like to remind you to follow our advice if you're visiting the countryside. Nationally there's already been double the amount of wildfires this year compared to the same period in 2022.
