17 years ago I came to Taung Village, from SOWETO, as a young Community Service Doctor. I had never heard of Taung before. At the end of my Community service year, My conscious could not let me leave the people of Taung. There were only 3 doctors at the hospital, and two GPs.

18 years ago this week, the MEDUNSA MBCHB class of 2001 took the Hippocratic oath. We were mostly from poor families, breaking the poverty cycle, mostly first time graduates in their families. Thanks to NSFAS, PUTCO foundation & the Japanese people for sponsoring my studies 🙏🙏

This put a smile on my face. We had teachers who brought hope to us when we had an evil state, violence and chaos around our communities in the 90s, they held our hands and encouraged us not to give up on school. Teachers are so under appreciated, they are miracle workers 🙌

Homophobia is threat to us reaching the 90 90 90 goals (diagnosing 90% of HIV infections, putting 90% of HIV patients on ARVs, and achieving 90% viral suppression). LGBT community feels stigmatized in health centers and as such do not avail themselves for HIV testing.
