RT @mar5hallhoops: You have to be willing to tell players the truth and not what’s popular or common. Being their friend is not as importan….

Lots of different ways to be effective on O, but the best offensive teams find ways to engage all 5 defenders on every possession. Most HS teams don't have 5 willing and capable defenders on the court - if you make all 5 work on every possession you will find great shots.

It is also tough for post players because most perimeter players have little interest/ little skill in post entry passes. I know the game has changed, but getting easy baskets, drawing fouls and collapsing the defense by getting the ball inside are all still good offense.

It's really tough to be a post player in high school because of the way the game is officiated. Smaller players are allowed to body them and displace them on virtually every possession without a call, but if they try to match the physicality it is called a foul immediately.

If you are going to cuss your team out in public you should probably do it in the corner of a gym instead of taking them out in the hallway so that everyone walking to any of the other 3 courts can hear you do it.

The player with the ball in ball screen situations has to use the screen correctly- be a threat to turn the corner and score. If you are coming off ball screens and not engaging at least three defenders in the play you are letting the defense off the hook and wasting the action.

So many teams use ball screens that your ability to execute offensively and defensively in ball screen situations has never been more important. As a defender you have to be able execute whatever coverage your team is using every time.

Communication is critical. The best defensive teams are constantly talking, but you can't talk just to talk. You have to be communicating something of value and it has to be loud enough for your teammates to hear you.

Turning a layup into a 3 pt play is a terrible defensive play. Let it go or make them earn it at the free throw line depending on the game situation, but you can't just give them free points with a soft foul.

Transition O/Transition D determines the outcome of so many games. You win/lose these possessions within the 1st 3 steps of your conversion from O to D or D to O. You have to sprint the court immediately - it's too late if you wait to see if you need to sprint.

The best offensive teams play at full speed. They can pass and catch and execute at full speed. You can't play the game of basketball unless you can execute the basics at game speed.

Stop waiting for the ball to come to you and go get it. Meet passes, pursue rebounds, dive on loose balls - nothing helps your team more than possession of the basketball. The best teams have a sense of urgency in everything they do.

Play with 2 hands. Passing and catching with two hand eliminates so many turnovers. Grabbing rebounds and loose balls with two hands creates extra opportunities throughout the game.

Every offense and every set play works better when you actually set and use screens. The best offensive teams work together to set and use screens instead of just running past each other. You can't do advanced things until you execute the fundamentals every time.

Forcing a contested shot instead of pitching the ball to an open shooter is bad offense. The best offensive teams are unselfish and consistently pass up good opportunities to score to create great ones.

Body language screams. Championship teams are made up of unselfish players and competitors not people who throw their hands up in the air in disgust every time a teammate doesn't throw them the ball when they think they should have gotten it.

Don't compound a mistake on the offensive end by committing an unnecessary foul on the other end. You have to be able to maintain your composure and focus on what you can control. Don't let a missed shot or turnover on the last play cause you to lose the next play.

Why are multiple state championship coaches getting ejected in the summer? And why is it the weakest official on the court doing it every time??? Calling a technical after you blew the 1st call is a recipe for a miserable and short career as an official.
