If you’re with British Gas and experiencing similar issues, my advice is simple: don’t settle for their incompetence. There are better options out there, and no one deserves the stress British Gas caused me.

If you’re considering an energy supplier, save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere. My experience shows that BG is one of the worst companies I’ve ever dealt with. Switching to Octopus has been a breath of fresh air, and I’m finally able to put this nightmare behind me.

My Advice. I cannot recommend British Gas to anyone. Over three and a half years, they caused me stress, wasted my time, and cost me money. Even when the Ombudsman upheld my complaints, their compensation fell short of the financial harm they caused.

A New Beginning with Octopus Energy. After switching to Octopus Energy, the difference has been night and day. From day one, Octopus has been responsive, transparent, and a pleasure to deal with. It’s incredible how a company can operate so effectively when compared to BG.

Customer Service Failures. Throughout all three complaints, British Gas’s customer service has been consistently appalling. Responses were slow, dismissive, and unhelpful. Each issue required hours of my time to pursue and resolve.

BG hid behind their t&cs , offering me only £1.34 per day for the time they failed to provide the correct tariff— £400 short of what I was owed! This inadequate reimbursement added insult to injury, as their mistake cost me significantly more than they were willing to pay back.

3. The EV Tariff That Wasn’t. The 3rd complaint stemmed from British Gas placing me on an Electric Vehicle (EV) tariff but failing to charge me the reduced overnight rate as promised. When I raised this issue, they eventually admitted their error, but their solution was insulting.

The Energy Ombudsman intervened, ruling that I should be allowed to spread the cost over a period that suited my financial circumstances. However, British Gas initially resisted even this ruling, demonstrating a complete lack of care for their customers’ situations.

2. Demanding a Year’s Worth of Energy in One Payment. The second complaint arose when British Gas demanded I pay an entire year’s worth of energy charges in one lump sum.

1. Wrong Meter Assigned to My Property. When I moved into my house, British Gas linked my account to the wrong meter. This wasn’t just a minor administrative error—it became a massive, drawn-out ordeal that British Gas couldn’t resolve for months.
