We measured everything from number of rooikrans trees removed (37 mature trees), cut stem diameters (average of 151mm) and circumferences, to the new plant life taking root in the cleared areas (mostly Senecio arenarius – Sandveld ragwort & Zantedeschia aethiopica – Arum lily).

Mature trees rarely survive, and coppicing (regrowing from the base) is uncommon. Our efforts were a success and no coppicing was observed! The monitoring team also took this opportunity to gather important data.

Recently (in October), we returned to see how our hard work has paid off. The big question: has the rooikrans tried a sneaky comeback with new shoots? Good news—this invasive species isn’t much of a fighter post-felling.

Armed with a chainsaw, a brushcutter, loppers, and handsaws, the team cleared the steep slopes scattered with this unwelcome guest, cutting trees as close to the ground as possible and stacking the remains into piles up the river embankment.

From March to June this year, our alien clearing team in the Nature Care Fund took on a tough battle against the invasive rooikrans (Acacia cyclops) in the riparian area at Bokbaai Nature Reserve.
