#TSTTPD
is a piercingly vulnerable window into the 2022-2023 psyche of the biggest star in the world. It has some *really* good songs. I think it might be the most interesting lyrical product she’s ever put out. And it is, objectively, not her best album. Bear with me.
My dad overheard a conversation at Thanksgiving about the show The Last of Us and wanted to binge it before Christmas, but he accidentally watched This Is Us instead and his texts to the group chat about “where are the zombies” are insane
So just to recap:
@taylorswift13
, born on the 13th, 13 years after the Kanye incident at the
@vmas
, accepts the VMA for her 10 minute version of a song and announces her 10th studio album, coming in the 10th month of the year. It will have - naturally - 13 tracks.
The Bengals kicker Evan McPherson is standing on their bench about to watch the halftime show. Not even going to the locker room. I feel like we might revisit this later.
1) Gotta be said: Travis Kelce is putting on a boyfriending clinic in supporting a strong woman this week - every question session is about her, he’s smiling through it all, not spilling ANY tea, deferential but grateful, admiringly complimentary, never losing his cool.
1) As someone who was (briefly) in charge of the Twitter Media team - the group tasked with getting high profile people onto Twitter, and verification - AND as one of the few ever to voluntarily give up the blue check, I want to try to articulate how risky this policy change is.
Hot Twitter tip from someone who worked there: every time you retweet or quote tweet someone you’re angry with, it *helps* them. It disseminates their B.S.
Hell for the ideas you deplore is silence. Have the discipline to give it to them.
I can tell you definitively as former CEO of Ticketmaster that this will cause consumers to unknowingly pay more than they intended, while airlines will run tests to find the best way to trick consumers into paying those fees. Unconscionably anti-consumer. A complete sell out.
The best CEO in music has launched her next campaign. Fifteen on a Snapchat filter. Conan Gray and Olivia Rodrigo doing TikToks of White Horse and You Belong With Me. Hey Stephen on a Twitter fan account. Breathe on Tumbler. The music biz continues to change before our eyes 👀
4) Not tryna be gross, but this album is her vomiting from being lovesick. She told us as much. She just had to get it all out, via the only way she knows how to deal with hurt: writing. No way was the intended purpose to “follow up the third AOTY”. It was to survive.
3) We verified those people so that any user could know they were interacting with a real account; part of the fun of twitter is the real time dialogue with thought leaders (that then flows to others in the replies who get to share their thoughts and ideas).
2)The reason the Twitter Media team existed was because *almost all* of the engagement on Twitter happens with tweets from high profile people/organizations across government, sports, music, business, news, whatever the Kardashians are, etc. They’re the lifeblood of the platform.
Springsteen’s average set list: 23 songs
Prince’s average set list: 24 songs
Beyoncé: 33 songs
@taylorswift13
tonight: FORTY FOUR SONGS
Y’all will *still* have questions about the set list, but the real question is: is this physically sustainable for the entire tour?!?
1) Okay let’s consolidate. Reaction thread here.
Out of context from the rest of the album, Lavender Haze is the best album opener she’s ever put out
Maroon - “that’s a real fucken legacy” is a lyric on the second song of a Taylor Swift album now
13) The likely sequencing will be like LeBron: first, give up the check and not pay. But as the experience degrades and impersonation abounds, creators will start to wonder why they’d contribute content to a platform and company that holds them in such contempt.
2) Following Midnights and the apex of her stardom with a new release was inevitably going to invoke critical scrutiny; but I’m here to tell you that making her “best” album ever was definitely not the point. It requires no apology. I think she made what she had to.
12) It is also, at times, achingly sad. These are not bops and bangers. And that’s okay! She’s with Travis Kelce now, who is basically a 6 foot 5 bop and banger. The next album is probably going to make you dance your face off. That wasn’t on The Chairman’s agenda this time.
3) Every word of these songs reads of wrenching heartbreak from the longest relationship of her life, and the most public (and apparently painful) rebound of her life. Early 2023
@taylorswift13
was apparently pretty vaporized inside while performing the biggest tour in history.
1) A quick thread on why she’s going to make you wait 5 months (and why it has implications for the music business going forward). In short: she’s put out a *lot* of content in a short period of time. A fairly unprecedented amount for such a huge artist.
The next album that I’ll be releasing is my version of Red, which will be out on November 19. This will be the first time you hear all 30 songs that were meant to go on Red. And hey, one of them is even ten minutes long🧣
13) The biggest message is normally cliche but it’s searing from Taylor-f*ing-Swift: a billion dollars and fan adoration doesn’t make you happy. It doesn’t insulate you from hurt. What you see from the outside is not what’s inside another human. Live your own life.
I think
@taylorswift13
is our greatest musical chameleon. It sounds trite, but objectively: no one has shifted more effectively between genres and generations. This woman made Reputation! She’s bridged not just decades but centuries. What an artist.
14) That will be the point at which we might expect a wave of silence to ensue. The first real staring contest of the creator economy is upon us. Will creators seize the moment? Can Twitter sustain it? 🍿
9) Lyrically, though, she shines. There are stunning insights into the artist-fan relationship from her rarefied air. The fans bullied her out of love. She says this. She was worryingly depressed while parading around in front of stadiums smiling. Functioning alcoholic!
18) See
@taylorswift13
is, ever wonderfully, tortured - and she’s now done a bit of the same to her fanbase. Can she trust them with her feelings? Can they own that they’ve hurt her? Can they accept this for what it is? Can she ever feel/be *not* great and still be great?
(Yes!)
9) But what Twitter is going to start doing tonight flips the equation - it is going to ask its most important creators to *pay Twitter* instead of the other way around. Every other social media platform has found a way to pay its creators, not charge them. Will it work?
7) Fortnight is great. Down Bad is Downright Badass. Smallest Man Who Ever Lived is INTENSE. The breaths. The low register voice. Mercy. You believe her when she talks about the loss of her life. Clara Bow is clever af. Hearing there are a few even better ones coming.
5) So it’s no surprise she went with what she knows (mostly the great Jack Antonoff) to execute it. He was safe for some very unsteady emotional space. Important. And the record has a lot of things you’ve heard before as a result. Some people will criticize this. It’s fair.
11) There’s a bit of sweet grace towards Joe that honors those 6 years, even if she’s pissed about giving up that much youth (as she writes), or feeling abandoned. She’s flat out angry at Matty. And if you squint, some of the fans too. She has tRuSt iSSueS. It's cathartic poetry.
1) Does it matter that she’s a billionaire? The cooler-than-thou critics can’t seem to shake that context, and dismiss this work as a bit childish. How can she, at 34, still be singing about the same themes?
2) Appreciates the interest in her without being annoyed by it. Just 💯a role model for why putting your partner on a pedestal doesn’t mean compromising masculinity. Thought he was a meathead at the start. He’s as high EQ as they come.
4) There were a bunch of important safety and security reasons for doing this as well. Hero tweeps like
@KatieS
and
@Larakate
have all the scars/stories to prove it. It was also possible to organically build a verifiable account by gaining followers and impact on the platform.
12) This is the first major opportunity for creators, as a whole, to flex their muscle and reclaim power in the web3 age (if that’s a thing 🤷♂️). If most OG blue checks stop tweeting in protest of being asked to pay to create the content that Twitter lives by…Twitter dies.
7) But again, the Media Team spent all their time and resources supporting the people who - and the data undeniably proved this - support the platform. We knew where our bread was buttered. Twitter didn’t exist without these creators sending tweets. Now…
10) Every day that goes by validates Zuck’s famous “clown car crashed into a gold mine” description of Twitter. While it looks like a criticism on the surface, it is in fact praise for the underlying resilience and perseverance of Twitter. As Zuck discovered, it’s hard to kill.
8) Some of this album will undoubtedly grow on you like Reputation did. She says she puts narcotics in her songs, after all. It’s only Friday. AND overall, it’s not as melodically new, and the interplay between melody and lyrics is usually her superpower.
Welp, it’s a stadium tour
Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, HAIM, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams, and OWENN is a pretty great set of openers
Tickets reasonably priced
Have at it
6) Sneaky think it might be a tough few days for the fanbase. They’ll hear some valid criticism they aren’t used to (if the critics dare), and for many they’ll have to reconcile their own truth that this isn’t their favorite, while still rightly celebrating it and supporting her.
5) There can be some debate over whether Twitter thrived on giving many non-verified users false hope that they were doing anything other than shouting into the void; regardless, it was (and is) the case that verified users are what drive engagement.
The subtle thing about this announcement is it means the Dolphins aren’t playing a home game 10/20/24, the Saints are on the road 10/27/24, and the Colts are away 11/03/24.
She’s just straight up dictating the
@NFL
schedule now LOL 🏈
8) There were times where certain high profile people actually asked to be paid to join Twitter. There was some internal discussion about this over the course of the company’s history. But the decision was always to hold the line and hope the network effects would win. They did.
6) Now, surely there are verified users today who don’t deserve it. They craved the status symbol and found a way to worm their way in. The percentage is low, and the impact to the platform negligible. Any designation like this is by definition subject to human judgement.
This interview response was published yesterday. Then the photo below today. Jack Antonoff doesn’t work on re-recordings (10 Minute All Too Well was basically a new song). Which is to say:
She’s making a new album.
10) Yes, a lot of this sounds like it’s about Matty Healy, while less than expected is about Joe Alwyn. And so it makes more sense she didn’t call off the fans from the attack until tonight - the fans had already attacked. That’s her point, and the source of some of her hurt.
really feel like thanK you aIMee is the Would've Could've Should've of this record - no way to release it as part of the regular album without overshadowing the narrative of everything else
equally f*ing deadly
11) Tonight is another test of that resilience. While a lot of web3 stuff has proven nonsense, the underlying principle that creators should have ownership in the consumer facing platforms that their content powers is still a vibrant idea, one most creators passionately believe.
14) Receiving that message is also awkward as hell; we have spent the last six months as a society obsessing over her new relationship, in which she appears to be publicly and deeply in love. Her current situation seems 180 degrees from what’s expressed on Tortured Poets
Last week, from the stage: this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life, my life finally all make sense
This week: Here’s a song with the words “I wouldn’t marry me either” that I’ve put on a CD and am selling exclusively for three days out of a trailer in New Jersey
17) But for now, we'd do well to observe the imagery on
#tsTTPD
of her toiling and reckoning, and adopt some of that for ourselves. This album matters. It’s part of her narrative. But it doesn’t have to be your favorite or anyone else’s. Let her create from just where she is.
I Shazammed this at a diner today, couldn’t believe they were playing it. Looked up streaming data. Superman is
@taylorswift13
’s 190th most streamed song. Imagine having a catalogue so deep that a diner proactively plays your song and you have 189 songs people like even *better*.
15) That might make it hard for some to over invest in the feelings she’s adeptly writing about; but maybe the lasting lesson of the art and her current spotlight taken together is actually hopeful, and that however badly you’re feeling, this too shall pass. It gets better.
Jason Kokrak appears to have been disqualified for hitting his second shot on his last hole 44 yards over the green into spectators on the road, then just gotten in his car and driven off to join the LIV tour without even submitting a scorecard. Growing the game!
And there it is. In the pantheon of the all time greats in music, there is no “best”. But in a very important way,
@taylorswift13
now stands alone.
🏆 🏆🏆🏆
1) I ❤️ the song but the remarkable thing about it is that it reflects the incredibly prolific creative moment these artists are in together. The through line between Dessner, Vernon,
@taylorswift13
and (not featured here) Antonoff now looks like one hell of a musical family 🌳.
When
@Aaron_Dessner
came into my life, I was ushered into his world of free-flowing creativity where you don’t overthink, you just make music. A song we wrote for his project
@BRMadjv
(which also features ⚡️Justin Vernon✨) is out! It’s called Renegade.
This million mile flyer gift United sent me perfectly exemplifies my experience over those million miles: done as cheaply as possible, crammed into a molded airtight container, forced to remain uncomfortably askew in a space that doesn’t fit for what feels like a goddamn eternity
1) The
@TigerWoods
vs
@PhilMickelson
approach to creating organizational change is worthy of a biz school case study. It captures the nuance of an era of individualism where creators have unprecedented control, but the age old rules of interpersonal and team dynamics still apply.
Anti-hero is *everything* we hoped for
“Did you hear my covert narcissism”
“I’m the problem - it’s me.” Contrast this with 10 minute All Too Well “You. That’s what happened. You.” 🫠
Also. You’re allowed to freak out that she’s dreaming about having a daughter in law.
16) We’ll talk more on Every Single Album (up this weekend!) about all this - tons more detail, a full album breakdown, and where she might go from here. I’ve gotta listen to it more. These are strong opinions loosely held. Nora might totally disagree? That’s the fun stuff.
If you were worried, it’s okay.
It’s unf*ingbelievably good.
I dunno how much more she and Jack can do this but…
The covers are off. We are heavily using the word “fuck”
Shoutout to
@phoebe_bridgers
the winner and still heavyweight champion of the only woman with a verse
trying to get my head around the fact that in the past two weeks
@jackantonoff
was deeply involved in releasing the
@the1975
and
@taylorswift13
albums and four other people have to show up at the Grammys pretending they might win producer of the year
heard the next
@NiallOfficial
single today and it is run through a wall of fire good 🔥🏃♂️
there is also a ballad on this album that is the best representation of his voice ever recorded
all this man does is make great, under appreciated music
6) So she’s asking us to take a breath, to live with each album for a moment. To stay present with it and not swipe through your feed to what’s next. That’s not a bad message for life overall, tbh.
Whatever you’re hustling for, take note: most people/companies are shut down until ‘18. That means you get 2 extra weeks to outwork your competition. That’s 3.8% more time. For perspective: Usain Bolt won his gold medals running 1.2% faster. These 2 weeks are a gift. Get to work.
In conclusion: it appears she has done the *work*. This is, at the same time, a retrospective across everything you’ve heard before, and something entirely new. It continues the urgency of creation from the past five years.
As she says on the last track:
It was all by design.
1)While this is usually Grammy Week in LA, this year it’s
@Beyonce
Coronation Week. *Everyone* from artists, to execs, to the people w/the telecast believe she’s winning Album of the Year. At this point it would be one of the biggest shocks/upsets in history if she doesn’t. BUT…
7)The re-recorded stuff will come out in its own time, once it’s had (in her view) its moment. She is, after all, a woman who defines herself by the eras of each album. So take the next five months to revisit the torrent of music she’s put out over the past year (evermore is 💯)
8) (or she’s throwing you off the scent and gonna surprise you with 1989 or an album of completely new stuff on the folklore anniversary in July chilllll outtttttt just kidding)
1) Some long and loose ⛳️ thoughts on the big
@PGATOUR
news today from someone *insanely highly invested* in a family member who has been both inside and outside the Top 50 line and will be fighting every week for position:
Every Single Album pod w/
@NoraPrinciotti
is done. It’s in
@kaya_mcmullen
‘s capable hands now. You may not need to pray for
@taylorswift13
, but with 31 songs, two hours of podding and song reference clips, you might need to pray for Kaya. She’s the best. Should be up tonight 😊
2) We know from her public communication how important she views the concept of an album. For many in today’s music biz, the Tiktokization of content means shorter, more frequent output. But for her, each album is its own individual being.
1)🚨Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is here 💜🚨
Every Single Album will drop next week as we’ve had time to process and analyze.
BUT let’s do some real time reactions here👇
There will be a few clear narratives from SNTV. The first (fitting since Mean is here) is her voice.
Fowler just tapped in for par on his 9th hole, ran into player dining, and emerged with a cafeteria tray of turkey sandwiches for the entire group and caddies
At the Valspar championship this week, players can put whatever name they want on the back of their caddies. Some golfers chose their social handle, others a nickname,
@HomelessHubbs
chose this
