After going through the above, I prepare a report for our Head Coach with the players profile, but answering a key question:. Can we coach this player for the next nine months?.

Bad games/possessions tell you a lot. Everyone looks good on a highlight tape. But how do they handle adversity?. – Missed shots.– Tough matchups.– Defensive mistakes.

Effort is as important as execution. – Do they sprint back on D after a miss?.– Do they crash the glass?.– Do they hold form on a shot, or walk away?.

I quickly create a shortlist of players that we're interested in. This is usually based on their initial highlight tape. Then I get access to full games. - do they space with purpose?.- do they get into helpside?.- do they relocate after passing?.

I've watched a ton of highlight tapes this summer. But evaluating a player requires looking past the highlight tape and peeling back layers. Here's my process:.

Working with youth players means aligning with those closest to them and finding ways to best support the player through their development. I've learned to engage and connect with parents regularly, especially during the off-season.

The off-season is full of unseen conversations. And some of the most important ones happen with parents. Not about minutes.Not about scholarships.Not about exposure. But about growth. .

Passing on a skilled recruit means that he may be picked up by another team in your league - they may hurt you twice or three times in a season. Picking up a bad recruit will hurt you everyday - in practice, in the weight room, in the locker room and when the lights are on.

These things don't show up on Synergy. But all of it translates. Because when it comes to a person's character:. How you do anything is how you’ll do everything, especially when the lights are on.

Do they:. – arrive early consistently without being told.– do they help a teammate through a drill without being dismissive.– do they huddle the group after a bad play.

When it comes to recruiting, players' skills are available for all to see. fast, athletic, physical. but these don't matter as much as the intangibles.
