Headed to the water this weekend? Stay safe by choosing a lifeguarded beach or outdoor pool. Visiting a location without lifeguards? Assess the dangers before you enter the water, and always stay with others. More advice from @RLSSUK 👇.

Despite 57% of accidental drownings from 2019-2023 occurring in inland waters (WAID Enhanced Data, 2025) there is currently no statutory duty on fire and rescue services in England to respond to these incidents. More from @NFCC_FireChiefs:

If you see someone else in trouble, do not enter the water yourself. Instead - Call, Tell, Throw:. 📞 Call the emergency services and explain the situation.🗣️ Tell the person in the water to float.🛟 Look for something that floats to throw to them until emergency services arrive

However you get into trouble in the water, float to live:. - Tilt your head back with ears submerged.- Relax and try to breathe normally.- Move your hands to help stay afloat.- It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently.- Spread your arms and legs to improve stability

Cold water shock is the body’s physiological response to sudden immersion in cold water, leading to an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing, and temporary loss of swimming ability. This can result in drowning, especially if the person falls into the water unexpectedly.

Even thought the weather is warm, water temperatures can remain dangerously cold. Across the UK, many inland waters remain below 16°C all year round, the temperature when water is considered hazardous for cold water shock.
