A wet May continues across much of the East. In a few areas, this is one of or the wettest Mays on record. Many areas have had over 4" of rain this month and some have cracked the 6" mark. Boston, MA was a big jumper since we last put out this graphic a couple of days ago.

April had it's share of spring showers and storms, with a wet pattern the first half of the month and several notable rounds of severe weather impacting parts of the Eastern United States throughout the month along with a notable late season snow in parts of the Northeast.

April started out wet, but the last week has been dry across much of the Eastern US, as evidenced by the drier soil moisture. Needed rain is on the way through Saturday night, with precipitation lingering through Sunday in northern New England.

Does it seem like we've had a lot of wet days lately? In some areas, more days have had precipitation since March 15th than saw precipitation from January 1st to March 14th. A major pattern flip has resulted in frequent wet days in parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

With the calendar in mid-April you might be wondering based on the last 30 year average when you could be done seeing the last touches of winter - either snow or freezing temperatures, depending on what you consider it to be. Here are some statistics for some selected locations.

So far this April has been off to a soggy start, especially in the OH Valley, where some areas have already surpassed the normal precipitation total for the entire month of April. Even with all the rain, these values are far from the wettest April ever at these locations for now.

As a follow-up to our post yesterday about dry conditions in the Northeast, dry conditions have also persisted in many areas of the Southeast since October 2024. In some cases, the last six months have been the driest ever recorded in that area.

Since developing late last summer, drought conditions have persisted in many parts of the Northeast US, especially in eastern PA, central MD and southern NJ. In some areas this was the driest such period on record and a Top 5 in many others. This includes March, which was wetter.

Zero has been a popular number so far this March for snow at many locations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. If these numbers hold through the end of the month, several locations could tie and in a few cases set a record, for the first ever snowless March.

Today is the last full day of astronomical winter and you might be curious how cold it got compared to avg. Many locations got colder than the 30 yr avg coldest low of the season. Most areas had their lowest readings Jan 21-23, but others reached them in late Dec-early Feb.
