“Awake ECMO patients can begin the rehab process within days.” shared Adj A/Prof Ramanathan K.R., Snr Consultant, Div. of CTICU, NUHCS. This prevented muscle loss, sped up recovery, allowing her to come off life support in 4 days - half the usual time.

At 22, Gwendolyn Lye battled heart failure, clinging to life with the ECMO life support machine. Usually, such patients are sedated & immobilised. The #NUHCS & NUH team took another approach: Awake ECMO - where patients are conscious & engage in physical rehab to aid recovery.
