School librarians do so much more than check out books—they’re full-fledged teachers! For example, Lincoln Public Schools, elementary librarians lead 5–11 lessons per quarter, per grade, helping students build research, learning, and critical thinking skills that last a lifetime.

Spotlight on the future! One of Kearney Public Schools’ MTSS goals is College and Career Readiness, and the Meadowlark Library is bringing that goal to life. Each month, our talented 5th-grade news anchors sit down with a community guest for a special career interview.

I love using the News Literacy Project’s Rumor Guard with my students to practice fact-checking! I check new content regularly to see how it’s been evaluated, then collaborate with teachers so students can practice lateral reading and fact-checking skills.

Display idea: These books should be friends! Display books with similar subjects together, explaining what they have in common!

Design a small graphic or short message that fits on a 3x3 inch sticky note. Stick these notes inside books—about 6 different books at a time—in titles that get checked out occasionally. When a student brings you a sticky note, give them a small prize, then hide a new note.
