A fibroscan uses ultrasound waves in a different way to detect scarring of the liver.​ It is a non-invasive procedure, and a result is available immediately – helping us find undiagnosed cases.

Liver disease is now the second leading cause of preventable death in the UK. The initial stages tend to develop with few symptoms. Now Fibroscans are being used to speed up the diagnoses meaning patients can start their treatment earlier.

Yesterday more than 70 staff attended our World Patient Safety Day conference to hear about this and whole other raft of improvements around diagnostics and diagnoses.

Direct access to CT is reducing wait times and leading to quicker cancer diagnoses with patients getting their CT on the same day as the referral, and results heard at an MDT within 3 days. That’s a reduction of 9 days from endoscopy to scan and 20 days between referral and MDT.

We know how important a timely diagnoses is for patients, for their long term health and also for the stress and anxiety felt whilst awaiting news. As part of #WorldPatientSafetyDay2024 we’re sharing examples of how our staff are working hard to make improvements in this area..
