Gene Steratore, 15-year veteran official, informed me today that he is retiring from the
@NFL
. Steratore entered the league in 2003, was promoted to referee in 2006, & worked 12 playoff games, ending his career at Super Bowl LII. We wish Gene all the best!
Congratulations to our 2 newest
@NFL
referees, former BJ Shawn Hochuli & former SJ Alex Kemp. Best wishes to our 2 retiring referees, Ed Hochuli & Jeff Triplette.
We are deeply saddened to share the news of Wayne Mackie's passing. He will forever be remembered by those who knew him as one of the kindest, nicest, most genuine individuals any of us have ever known ❤️
“Referee John Parry has announced his retirement after 19 seasons & 3 Super Bowls. Thank you, John, for your dedication to the game. We wish you all the best!” - AL
In
#LARvsSEA
, the punt was blocked and recovered by the kicking team. The punter kicks the ball again from behind the line of scrimmage. This is a legal kick and the result of the play was the ball was ruled down at the 11 yard line.

“Yesterday, 25-year
@NFL
Referee Mason “Red” Cashion passed away. Red worked two Super Bowls (XX and XXX) and over 500 professional games. He was well known for his enthusiastic first down calls. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.” -AL
Congratulations to Tra Blake on being named referee!
Tra joined us from the ACC in 2020, starting his
@NFL
career as a field judge before moving to the umpire position in 2021.
After much deliberation & input from coaches, players,
@NFLLegends
, & club executives, the
@NFL
Competition Committee will recommend the following language simplifying the catch rule at the Annual Meeting next week.
"All angles of the final play of
#MINvsNO
were looked at in New York – there is contact by both players, but none of that contact rises to the level of a foul." - AL
In
#NYJvsIND
, the ruling on the field was an incomplete pass. After review, it was determined that IND 11 possessed the ball with one foot on the ground and took two additional steps in the end zone, completing the process of a catch. Therefore, the ruling was reversed to a TD.
“
@Panthers
Eric Reid was ejected for unnecessary roughness for forcible contact to the head and neck area of a sliding quarterback in
#CARvsPIT
.” – AL
“In
#PHIvsCHI
, the receiver controlled the ball with two feet down & took an additional step, so it was a catch. However, because he was not down by contact & there was ‘no video evidence of a clear recovery or the ball going out of bounds’, the ruling of incomplete stands.” - AL
In
#INDvsBUF
, the ruling on the field is that the runner was down by contact. The was no clear and obvious visual evidence to overturn the ruling, so it stands.
In
#DALvsPHI
, the ruling on the field was a fumble. Possession wasn’t established until Eagles safety Rodney McLeod gained possession and ran it back. There was no clear evidence that anyone possessed the ball prior to him, so the ruling on the field stands.
Over the past several days, the
@NFL
Competition Committee has been reviewing the process of a catch. The first two elements are control and two feet down. Additional elements are also under consideration. Here are a few of the plays we are looking at.
“In
#SEAvsDAL
,
@dallascowboys
WR Amari Cooper controls the ball, gets two feet down, and then takes an additional step. The process of the catch is over at that point, so the ruling of a catch is confirmed.” - AL
“In
#SEAvsMIN
, MIN
#24
was penalized by on-field officials for unnecessary roughness and disqualified from New York for late and forcible contact to the head of the sliding quarterback.” -AL
“Knowing the impact that I’m having on not just my daughter, but young girls everywhere…is remarkable and I’m truly honored and humbled to be a part of this year’s Super Bowl crew.”
– Sarah Thomas on making
@NFL
history tomorrow
"Receiver controls the ball with his left foot touching the ground and then drags his right foot. Great call of a catch by Line Judge Jeff Bergman." - AL
#SBLIII
".
@eagles
DE Michael Bennett used his body weight to land on the quarterback while making the tackle with no attempt to go to the side." -AL
#PHIvsNYG
“After nine and five years of outstanding work as officials, respectively, side judges Adrian Hill and Scott Novak have been promoted to referees for the 2019
@NFL
season. Congratulations to them both!” - AL
In
#CINvsBUF
the ruling on the field was a touchdown. After review, CIN
#1
does not maintain control of the ball throughout the process. Therefore, the result is an incomplete pass.
"In
#KCvsSEA
, the receiver gains control of the ball and breaks the plane. His elbow hits in the end zone (which equals two feet), and he maintains control for a TD. His hand touching the pylon does not put him out of bounds." -AL
“
@Redskins
QB Alex Smith is legally contacted in
#ATLvsWAS
: the defender tackles with his head out, shoulder in. The QB can slide or step out of bounds to avoid the contact.” -EH
“Carson Wentz was a runner and he did not give himself up. We saw incidental helmet contact, and in our judgment, we didn’t rule that to be a foul.” – Referee Shawn Smith
#SEAvsPHI
#TBT
to 1993 – one of the most infamous Thanksgiving Day plays in
@NFL
history.
Did you know replay review didn’t play a role in this game? The vote to use instant replay wasn’t approved the year prior and it didn’t return until 1999.
In
#CLEvsBAL
, the ruling on the field was a touchdown. After review, there was no clear and obvious visual evidence to overturn the call on the field.
In
#DENvsDAL
, the punt is blocked & goes beyond the line of scrimmage, where it's touched by the receiving team. Since the receiving team touches the ball beyond the line of scrimmage, the kicking team is eligible to recover the ball. DEN recovers the ball, but cannot advance it.
The grounds crew may legally remove snow from the goal lines, sidelines, end lines and hashmarks. They may not clean off areas where kickers and/or holders will be setting up for attempted kicks. Individual players may assist in clearing these areas using only their hands or feet
Tonight is one for the books. Hear from the crew cementing their names in history as the

's first all-Black officiating crew.

"In
#GBvsNE
, a penalty was called for roughing the punter. The contact was deemed to be severe, which rises to the level of a 15-yard personal foul." -AL
This is legal contact on a defenseless player. The defender turns and makes contact with his shoulder to the mid-section of the receiver. – AL

We’re kicking off our annual
@NFL
Officiating Clinic at
@thestarinfrisco
.
Over the next few days, 122 game officials will participate in training, video review, wellness sessions & more in preparation for the 2019 season.
"In
#INDvsHOU
, on-field officials ruled that the runner had control of the ball when it broke the plane of the goal line. There was no clear and obvious evidence that control was lost before it broke the plane, so the ruling of a TD stands." - AL
After the interception by CIN 30, a non-uniformed member of the team enters the field of play to celebrate. This is a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.
#SBLVI
Congratulations to our retiring officials – Pete Morelli, Walt Coleman, Steve Stelljes and Larry Nemmers. Thank you for your years of dedication to the game, wish you all the best of luck! – AL
The ruling on the field in
#DENvsKC
was an incomplete pass. After review, it was determined that KC 87 did not fully complete the process of a catch, because the third element of a catch – time – was not met. Therefore, the ruling on the field stood as incomplete.
"In
#NEvsPIT
, the ruling on the field is neither NE player touched the goal line before touching the ball. Therefore, the ruling on the field of the ball being downed at the 1 yard line is correct." – AL
We welcome Shawn Smith as our newest
@NFL
referee for the 2018 season! After 3 seasons as an umpire, Shawn steps into the position vacated by the retirement of 20-year veteran Terry McAulay. We wish Terry the best!
This week's
#MNF
matchup between the
@RamsNFL
&
@Buccaneers
will make history – marking the first time an all-Black officiating crew will officiate an
@NFL
game.
The seven-man crew will be led by referee Jerome Boger, a 17-year veteran NFL official.
🔗:
"In
#LARvsCHI
, the officials correctly held up play to give the defense the opportunity to match on a late sub by the offense. Also, the LJ was knocked down by the incoming CHI sub, and was not in position to officiate. The officials properly stopped play." - AL
“In
#NYJvsNYG
, the defender significantly hinders the receiver’s opportunity to catch the ball. The ruling on the field is changed because there is clear and obvious visual evidence of defensive pass interference.” - AL
“In
#HOUvsPHI
, this is properly ruled roughing the passer. By rule, ‘lowering the head and making forcible contact with any part of the helmet against any part of the passer’s body’ is a foul.” -AL
RIP to a trailblazer 🙏

@NFL
's first Black referee — had a distinguished 24-year career as an official, including 15 post-season games before becoming an officiating supervisor for the League.
