In July of 1974, the profession’s two credentialing programs merged into the National Board for Respiratory Therapy (NBRT). The AAIT formed the American Respiratory Therapy Foundation (ARTF) to support research, education and charitable activities in the profession. #NBRCHistory

In 1979, the CSE was administered for the first time, replacing the Registry Oral Exam, and resulting in over 1,700 individuals earning the RRT credential. The "Orals", as many called them, were only able to accommodate 960 candidates each year. #NBRCHistory
