That's all for hotel accommodation. Maps on the total number of asylum seekers will come later. ICYMI, here's my last thread on asylum seekers in dispersed accommodation mapped by local authority area. / 9.

This week, the Home Office published the latest stats on asylum seekers. I’ve crunched the numbers and mapped the data — showing where they are staying, whether in hotels or dispersed housing, and the trends since 2024. 🧵/

The per capita map highlights the clustering around urban areas. Despite decreases in many boroughs relative to last year, London still has a high number of asylum seekers in hotels. Parts of Essex, Hertfordshire, and Warwickshire also have high concentrations of asylum seekers

In contrast to the number of asylum seekers in dispersed accommodation, which are concentrated up north, those in hotels are more evenly distributed across densely populated urban areas. Link to map here: / 7

Relative to population, Hillingdon still ranks highest, with 1 asylum seeker in hotel accommodation for every 147 residents. Stevenage and Tamworth, whose councils are pursuing legal action after protests, also feature in the top 10. / 6

Hillingdon hosts the largest amount of asylum seekers in hotels. With 2,238 asylum seekers using hotel accommodation in Hillingdon, it's no surprise that the council is considering a legal challenge. / 5

Most London boroughs have seen decreases in the number of asylum seekers in hotels, although this has definitely not been the case for Hillingdon or Hounslow which have seen large increases. Link to the map here: / 3

Birmingham, West Northamptonshire, Hillingdon, and Warwick have seen the biggest increases in the number of asylum seekers staying in hotels from July 2024 - 2025. Meanwhile, Westminster, Tower Hamlets, and Coventry saw numbers in hotels fall by 300+ over the same period. / 2

The Government has sought to bring down the number of asylum seekers in hotels from its peak of 56,042 in October 2023. While numbers have since fallen sharply, Labour has struggled to make progress, with numbers rising between July 2024 and July 2025. / 1

If the number of small boat arrivals increases at the same rate from Q2 to Q3 as it did in 2024, then 2025 Q3 could come very close to 2022's Q3 record number of 20,301.
