#SarcophagusSaturday takes us into #palazzoBarberini in #Rome to see this beautiful tub #sarcophagus in white marble surrounded by continuous #strigillation. This is an elegant #Dionysiac coffin: here the wave forms represent wine as well as the circular nature of time, and more.

#MosaicMonday once again draws us back to the #MuseodelleCiviltà in the #EUR in the south of #Rome to marvel at the #domus of #PortaMarina from #OstiaAntica, where a central alcove imitates humble brick and #tufo, complete with shadows, in costly #opussectile.

At almost 2,000 years old, this child’s wooden toy sword is a remarkable survival from Roman times! Found in the living quarters of the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda fort in 2017. Dated c. 120 AD. Chesterholm Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

For #EpigraphyTuesday we're diving into the archaic past to find an #inscription from well outside #Rome that may be primary- source evidence of one of the two consuls who founded the #Roman Republic. The Latin might be Volscian and the #epigraphy is unclear. So buckle up, y'all.

The tombstone of a #Roman gladiator named Apollonios; the portrait identifies him as a retiarius, armed with a trident & fishing net. He was obviously good at what he did, with the inscription - dedicated by his wife Zosime - revealing that he won 48 combats in his career.
