The song was inspired by sleigh races in Medford, Massachusetts, and the jingling bells refer to the bells strapped across the horse to make a jingle, jangle sound. Over time, "Jingle Bells" became associated with Christmas and is now one of the most popular holiday songs.

Did you know?! 👀.Jingle Bells" was originally written by James Lord Pierpont in 1850 as a Thanksgiving song titled "The One Horse Open Sleigh". It was first performed at a Thanksgiving church service and later published in 1857.
