You know what you need for a positive test result? Access to the test. If there are lower numbers in the Black community, it smells like inequity not immunity.
Happy story: I’m working in a rural ED. My patient needed to get admitted to the hospital. He refused because his dog was outside in the car. His PCP came at 11 PM to take his dog to her house. Patient now admitted.
If complete debt cancellation is a no go, I’d be willing to accept a permanent 0% interest rate for all federal student loans. Even that would be life changing for everyone.
This is so unfair to the immunocompromised. Imagine a cancer patient getting exposed to Covid from their nurse or doctor who was forced to come back to work sick. Wild times out here.
Today I was doing a hysterectomy and my attending was like “you’re doing a great job”. I was super focused on operating and my response was “yes”. Just yes. Very good laugh about it afterwards but honestly that’s the confidence we all need to bring to the room😂

Thank you!! Matching is when a graduating medical student “matches” into a residency training position in their chosen speciality. Basically it’s a doctor’s first doctor job. Resident physicians work under the supervision of more senior doctors (called attendings)
Everyone who has worked very hard for everything they have need to remember that there’s always someone who has worked just as hard or harder for the same things only not to have them
Black families don’t view you as an adult until you’re married and don’t consider you to have a family until you have children and that’s a little (read: lot) problematic
I ordered some hair and it came with 3 free KN95s and I am so tickled. The company said “here, American. Since we know you’re over there in the ghetto” 😂😭
I did 6 hysterectomies this week. Multiple other surgeries too. Learned a ton. Even when I get more comfortable in gynecology I still could never see myself operating for 8+ hours most days or treating cancer for a career.
A short story to describe how my shift went last night.
Me calling from a crusty landline phone in the ED: “I’m looking for the OR front desk. I need to post a GYN case urgently”
Other person: ma’am this is Chickfila
Y’all listen. Salary transparency needs to become the norm. It will be a lot harder for Brad to continue making more than everyone else if we all know how much each other are making.
Turns out that White male physicians make ~$100K more per year than Black female physicians 😡😡
According the the study, "patterns were unaffected by adjustment for specialty and characteristics of practice."

If you got the HPV vaccine before 2014 (which includes most of us in the 25+ crowd), I recommend getting the updated Gardasil vaccine which covers more types of HPV than the original vaccine. Cervical cancer is a very horrible disease, so do everything possible to prevent it.
On J&J vaccine: the fact that they’re pausing it to investigate 6 cases of a dangerous potential side effect should make the public more confident that everything is being done to ensure vaccine safety

Pretty sure demographics of all the cases aren’t public info. So we don’t know if there even is a disparity. My point was moreso pointing out that inqequity would be the more likely answer if the difference exists. And race/ethnic immunity to a respiratory virus is impossible
Got my intern schedule and it’s front loaded with the hardest rotations in the first half. These next 6 months are gonna be a wild BUT once I make it through December I should be really good at this

In med school it’s honors. In the working world it’s promotions and leadership positions. Unfortunately, these things we will have to push against our entire careers. “Work twice as hard to get half as much” doesn’t go away.
Yes there aren’t enough Black people in medicine by far BUT I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how infrequently I’ve been the only Black woman in these interviews. There are so many more Black women about to become OBGYNs than I realized. I love that for us 🥺
I won’t know WHERE I matched until Friday but to know I’ll be training as an OBGYN SOMEWHERE is enough. To know I’ll be doing what I’ve wanted to do since I was 17 is enough 😩
This is kinda funny to me because many people (mainly younger folks) don’t have a concept of how contagious chickenpox can be because… wait for it… vaccines ✨
Breaking News: The Delta variant is as contagious as chickenpox and may be spread by vaccinated people as easily as the unvaccinated, an internal C.D.C. report said.
Wish I could find that video of the girl who left her bf after he threw toilet paper at her. I wish more people would leave their partners after the first signs that they hate you. People who claim to love you should at the very least act like they like you.
Social media culture made traveling into a competition and that’s so gross to me. I really hope there’s a culture shift towards sharing less this decade.
My take on time off before med school: if there’s something you desperately want to do before signing up for a life of constantly studying for and practicing medicine (even if that thing is resting), do it. If not, go to med school.
I’m still really stuck on this Black chief resident dying of postpartum preeclampsia. Sis was near the finish line, interviewing for her career. Prayers for her family.
This weekend I admitted a patient to the hospital, delivered her baby, then discharged her this morning. Long hours are hard but being someone’s doctor from start to finish feels rewarding.
In medicine you’re not supposed to perform a test if the results won’t change your next step... tbh that’s applicable in real life. No wasted energy for asking questions if the answers won’t affect decision making.
