Try this the next time your child has a melt down or a student displays an inappropriate behavior. Better yet, try it when they say something mean to you. If I had a penny for every time a student creatively insulted me. "What's good on?" "What happened?" "What are you feeling?"

But every one of the things that fill it will be an interpretation of the situation from the observer's perspective. But when we replace *why* with *what* we give respect for the space that makes us individual humans.

One of the greatest mistakes we make as caregivers and humans is making assumptions. When we engage with each other, we ask *why* questions. "Why are you ....?" That ellipses can be filled with so many things.
