The peppered moth is a truly fascinating moth to observe and collect Looking at collections of the moth help to show the massive variety of shades its crucial evolution allowed to create. it's like every peppered moth you find is bound to slightly differ from the others

The peppered moths of today are truly fascinating moths, as all variants of the moth have recovered and they are thriving, being well documented and common Also! Research shows that both shades still see themselves as the same species. Often becoming mates with each other

A evolution like this wasnt thought possible at the time, and it still seems unbeliveable to someone like me who doesnt have that much knowledge in the field They continued to thrive and adapt to the pollution, and this brings us to today, how are the peppered moths doing now?

This evolution caused the local population to quickly recover as they became hard to find for predators again, being able to hide on the dark trees that were once the cause of their deaths This evolution proved how resilient moths were to the researchers of back then

Many cases of darker peppered moths had began to appear until the shift was officially recognised in 1848. It was true, the moth was evolving to be darker, and it was working In a timeframe that is lower then a human's life, the species had managed to completely change shades

—Any other living thing would have probably ended up going extinct with a change to their ecosystem as devastating as this. But the peppered moths had other plans In less then 50 years, researchers had already noticed a shift It appeared as if they were changing completely.

The peppered moths were in obvious trouble with this, they lost all aspects of their camouflage researchers at the time noticed a massive drop in their population as the predators they faced no longer had any trouble finding them, it was bad.—

Everything was fine until the start of the industrial revolution in the 18th century While mankind made a huge jump in technology, massive amounts of coal pollution began slowly covering the birch trees in soot and killing off the lichen patches they relied on so much

INTRODUCTION: The peppered moth is a white moth that lives in england as the images on the post above show they thrive on light wood, commonly being birch or random lichen patches So what happened? What could have caused them to get in danger?

The peppered moth, the moth that denied the death of it's species by adapting to a catastrophy brought by humans This is a thread 🧵 that goes over the history of this moth, expect it to be long Worth a read if youre intrigued, It's story is a fantastic display of evolution

I actually don't have much info on this moth as not much is available, i'm still just bamboozled at it's wing pattern No matter how much i look at it, the moment it's wings are in their natural position my eyes fall for the optical illusion of a folded leaf again

Back again with a cool camouflaged moth, meet the uropyia meticulodina, a moth that is niche even among the nerdiest of moth enjoyers due to it not having a common name yet (Only its scientific name is available) It's wings arent actually folded. It's an absolutely INSANE

Wolbachia is also not only unique to moths, scientists are trying to harness the bacteria and use it to control populations of bugs that are actively harmful to humans, deadly mosquitoes are the best example of this I'm not too much of a biology expert so i'm not gonna comment
