NYC district schools should be doing everything possible to engage parents, & that must include regular, in person touchpoints—it is not possible to address our learning & attendance crisis without family engagement.

Parent-teacher conferences remain virtual in NYC. Some love it, some hate it, and participation is down significantly from before the pandemic.

We also work hard to address inequities in out-of-school learning opportunities by providing free tutoring, cocuricular clubs, teams, camps, and summer experiences, and give our kids purposeful homework that keeps them learning when they leave school.

Huge gaps by income on the SATs are a symptom of 18 yrs of educational inequality both in and out of school. At @SuccessCharters, we provide free SAT prep at our high schools and 13 years of very rigorous learning.

It’s convenient to blame America’s educational decline on the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures, but in truth, the dysfunction dates back decades. My latest op-ed in @TheMessenger

Thank you @CBSNewYork for highlighting the Mental Health Club at our HSLA-MA. I’m so proud of our scholars for creating a safe space to discuss their mental health. Each of our schools has a social & emotional learning specialist to equip students with the support they may need.
A student-led mental health club became a popular and powerful resource for teens at Success Academy, which is setting a new standard for campuses everywhere. @tvjessi hears from the students about how it's helped them.

Hands-on learning experiences are vital for children’s education. On a ferry tour today of lower Manhattan, our scholars got to see the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Statue of Liberty, bringing the lessons from the classroom alive in real life!
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of our favorite locations to take our scholars for their fall project based learning unit. The unit ends with our scholars visiting the different types of bridges all across NYC that they’ve spent time learning about. #insidesuccess
