Seems like Harvie Conn was in the middle of creating a course at WTS titled, "Pastoral Theology & the Black Church," before his retirement. The bibliography indicates an intersection btwn the Black church & neo-Calvinist missiology. Sad we couldn't see the final product.

I especially loved how much I was able to involve my oldest in “helping” me with the rebuild. It brought us closer than I could’ve ever imagined. Also loved the countless conversations with neighbors strolling by who wanted to ask about the project.

3 yrs ago, I hydroplaned in my pandemic project car going under the speed limit in the rain. Instead of totaling it, I wanted to be a good neo-Calvinist by restoring it & making it even better. After countless hours of labor on my driveway, I finally crossed the finish line 🙌🏼

To be clear, I'm not sure if Conn is correct bc Ridderbos does have a small portion discussing Paul as a missionary. I'm also unconvinced throwing out abstractionism for the sake of accessibility is wise either. Seems like it could be a both/and? Nevertheless, Conn cracks me up.

1/ This killed me:. “You get a nearly a 600-page outline of theology that not once ever mentions the fact that Paul was a missionary. When I read [Herman Ridderbos’ “Outline of Paul’s Theology”], I think this guy doesn't know what Pauline theology is from a hole in the head….

3/ It's not nowhere near a typical kind of textbook, you know, where you have you get buried in the footnotes or, you know, gasping for breath on page two because you've already lost the major argument, you know. You'll enjoy reading it. You really will.".

2/ He is a a master writer in this whole area [of missions] and I think you'll find as you start reading ['Introduction to the Science of Missions'] how exciting it is. It's a fast reading book. It flows very easily.

1/ Harvie Conn to his students (9/10/1981): "[J.H. Bavinck] was for many years a missionary in Indonesia and then professor of missions at the Free University until his death. A lot of his stuff still has not been translated into the English language which is very unfortunate.

"Theology and exegesis is inevitably influenced by ideological, cultural, social, political values and commitments of the interpreter. There is no such thing as objective grammatical historical exegesis." -Harvie Conn.

3/ We spent much of our time today sharing our admiration for Harvie Conn and I saw in Dr. Edgar his former professor’s heart for the world. I’m truly indebted to this man for his lessons, encouragement, and example not just as a professor but as a mentor and advisor.

2/ As I got to know him, I realized that I didn’t just want to learn theology from him; I wanted to become more like him. He’s a true peacemaker, someone who models what it means to engage with non-Christians with both care and profound insight.

1/ Fifteen years ago, I took my first class with Dr. Edgar during a difficult season at my old seminary. I was immediately drawn to him, not just for his deep theological insights but for his warmth, gentleness, and kindness.

I’m all for the love Francis Grimké is getting lately. I just wish the same love could be shown for the Francis Grimkés of our day who are doing the same work and living out his legacy.

3/ What’s striking is that this growing group seems more drawn to liturgical, high-church spaces than to low-church, high-production ones. I could be totally off on this post so I’m showing my cards here in case anyone wants to push back.

2/ Most folks have settled into their tribes & their responses aren’t convincing the other side. That particular pastoral & missional moment seems to have passed. But a new opportunity may be emerging: secular moderate & right-leaning skeptics who value historic Christian ethics.

1/ Hot take: I think the deconstruction movement is largely over. Christian responses against Trump 2.0 policies don’t seem to be triggering major shifts in theology or stirring up the same Christian identity crises as last time. The lines have already been drawn.

Excited to see how this plays out globally. Genuine revivals have the tendency to be exported overseas: the English colonies to Great Britain (18th C.), the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival to Pyongyang (1907), etc. Looking forward to visiting Scotland to witness this firsthand.

1/ The stats from The Quiet Revival report are fascinating. 🔵 Since 2018, the churchgoing population of England & Wales has increased from 8% to 12%. 🔵 For 18-24 year olds, the increase has been huge: a change from 4% to 16%. Anecdotally this matches what I see in Edinburgh.
