Reading at my alma mater today—no not the prestigious Dartmouth or Stonecoast MFA, but rather Eastern Maine Community College. The only school to accept me and where I grew so much as a learner. Shout out to all the community colleges transforming lives.
Just got an email from my
@Tin_House
family--apparently Night of the Living Rez is now a National Bestseller!
That's just wild. Thank you, readers, for supporting my work!
Absolutely stunned and grateful and so happy to have been awarded the John Leonard Prize for Best First Book in any genre from
@bookcritics
! Kci woliwoni! Congrats to all the other winners and finalists! This was even sweeter to get the news with baby Charlie in my arms!
I am so so so happy to share the exciting news that Night of the Living Rez is longlisted for
@PENamerica
PEN/Jean Stein Book Award AND the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection!
Just crazy. Congrats to all the longlisters!!!
So excited to share the news that Night of the Living Rez is a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award John Leonard Prize for Best Debut (
@bookcritics
)! Congrats to the other amazing finalists who include Tess Gunty,
@J_Escoffery
,
@maudnewton
, and others!
Tax season is coming up. If you made any money from writing you can write off a number of things: books, submission fees, travel expenses, gas, portion of internet and phone, and more. Would love for friends to add here and share!
New evidence suggests the Earth's age is actually two billion years older than previous thought. The evidence comes from a submission found in American Short Fiction's submission queue dating back to 6.5 billion years ago.
I'm excited to announce that this fall, I'll be joining
@UMaine
as an Assistant Professor of English, specializing in fiction and Native American and contemporary literature. So unreal. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. I can't wait to bring all I have!
I'm so stunned and grateful and happy to share the news that Night of the Living Rez is a finalist for The Story Prize!!!
@Tin_House
@TheStoryPrize
Congrats to Andrea Barrett and Ling Ma! What company to be in! ❤️
I woke up from a nap to this news and was blown away, filled with so much joy, and then I exploded when I fed my baby boy. Thanks
@PENamerica
and congrats other finalists and winners! And thank you all who congratulated jord and me on Charlie. Now, back to him!
You know why nobody “wants” to read story collections? It’s because the publishing industry has convinced those readers they shouldn’t “want” to read them.
I’ve read more short stories that have had more emotional impact on me than novels. Just saying.
“Hi, I’m Janet Mills, governor of Maine. But I’m just like you—I’m human. I fart and poop. I have boogers. I’ve sharted before. But I’m also unlike you in that the Native American population in Maine can just—oh, how do I say this?—go f*^k themselves.”
Last night, at the Maine Literary Awards, Night of the Living Rez was awarded the Maine Book Award for Fiction, and I could not be more happy and thankful. Congrats to all the finalists and winners!
@MaineWriters
What! More good news? My mom sure is looking down today. Kosemol mumma and woliwoni. So excited to share that Night of the Living Rez is a finalist for the
@PENamerica
ROBERT W. BINGHAM PRIZE FOR DEBUT SHORT STORY COLLECTION! Congrats to the other finalists!
So. This is actually happening. I’m thrilled to announce my story collection, NIGHT OF THE LIVING REZ, will be published by the wonderful Tin House Books (
@Tin_House
) in 2022. Woliwoni to everyone who has supported me so far on my writing journey!
I'm just pumped for this to come out (Sept 19th). Every story is going to rock, and I'm so excited my story "The Prepper" will be out in the world--it's a quick taste of the story collection I'm working on called DOOMSDAY.
The Sun was the first magazine I ever subscribed to when I started writing. I’ve been submitting for 13 years, and finally I can say I have a piece in my favorite magazine! Thank you for taking my piece about my mom! Miss her so much.
Delighted to announce Night of the Living Rez is long listed for the 2023 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction! Kci-woliwoni!
So many great titles on this list--congrats to you all!
So, I no longer have to keep it a secret: I'm so grateful and honored and even dumbfounded to announce I'm 1 of 35 writers to receive a grant from
@NEAarts
! Kci-woliwoni! And MANY congratulations to the other recipients! Check here for more about them:
Thank you
@nytimes
!
"With 'Night of the Living Rez,' Talty has assured himself a spot in the canon of great Native American literature...[He] forms a rich and vast picture of what it is to be alive, with stunning clarity, empathy and unwavering honesty."
"This position comes with a 12/12 teaching load and you are expected to mentor 10 MA students and edit the college journal, The Turd. Must have PhD or MFA in hand by appointment and must have published 19 books. Salary is $27,000 plus a yearly stipend of 200 for chalk."
The week just keeps on coming with stuff. So happy and grateful to be awarded the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters! Kci woliwoni!
If you're a reader reading a book outside your own experience, don't blame the author if you can't connect with it. Reading is an active activity and you have to meet the work halfway, and sometimes even more than halfway.
Is this real? Holy shit.
I am so so so delighted and shocked and honored to learn that Night of the Living Rez is a Finalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction! Kci woliwoni to the others too!
@ALALibrary
@Tin_House
So delighted to share the news that I'll be joining the creative writing faculty at the Institute of American Indian Arts
@LowRezMFA
, starting this summer residency!
Just write that story you want to write. If it’s not right, then write it again. And again. Nothing fails—it’s all steps toward the right story, the one that wants to be told.
Writers! Tax season is coming up, and so just a friendly reminder that if you made any money from your writing, you can claim deductions: all those books you bought, website upkeep, new computer/tablet, anything and everything that is related to your writing.
Good morning writers: don’t forget to be proud that you wrote even if it was shitty writing, and don’t forget to be kind to yourself. And god forbid you write something beautiful, be brave and celebrate it.
I am so, so happy: I'll have a cnf piece coming out in a future issue of
@TheSunMagazine
.
The Sun was the first literary magazine I ever subscribed to when I started writing (back in 2009), so this is a dream come true. Kci-woliwoni!
I barely graduated high school, was rejected by the handful of universities I applied to, attended community college for three years, got help from so many professors, transferred to an Ivy League, and am now a Professor at UMaine, one of the places that denied me. I'm pretty…
this infamous crimson op-ed, by a legacy admit, captures the absolutely vile prejudice that underlies people’s opposition to affirmative action.
critics don’t disagree with a policy—they just assume we have nothing to offer
(this is, depressingly, from 2012)
"This tenure-track position comes with a 9/9 course load with expectations that faculty member will oversee 36 creative theses at minimum, serve on 19 committees, and sacrifice one goat per summer."
Terrible day for Maine and the nation. Here’s Charlie, who has no idea, getting me up at 4am and then napping at 6am. What innocence in such a world of violence. It breaks my heart.
Tip for submitting query letters to agents. If you’re having trouble getting a full request, try changing things up a bit. Get rid of the outdated “Dear So and So” and try something more catchy like “Sup, Hoe,” “To Whom it Definitely Concerns,” or “Hello, Motherfucker.”
Writers who have gone through creative wiring programs—undergraduate and or graduate—and writers currently in them: what do you wish existed for you during your time? What would have helped you? What would help you? What have you found helpful?
The longer you put off a writing project--or any project for that matter--the harder it is to get it done. When you're feeling it, dive in. Don't wait. That shit will disappear if you don't grab it by the throat.
I’m sorry but I can’t keep up with all these alternative social media sites like blue sky and threads and whatever the fuck else I got downloaded so I’m gonna stick to Twitter or X or whatever the fuck it is and if it sinks I’m going down with it and will not come back up.
So excited to have a story in this indigenous anthology coming out in September! NEVER WHISTLE AT NIGHT is going to be wild. Thanks
@shanehawkk
and Ted Van Alst and all the contributors! And special shout out to
@SGJ72
for the opening introduction!
Anyone who teaches and gives feedback to creative writing--fiction, autofiction, and nonfiction--what words do you use frequently when giving that feedback? For example, "Here might be a missed opportunity for X."
I received a very nice personal rejection this morning. The editor took the time to show up to my house and slap me across the face and then spit at my feet before leaving and saying, “we’d love to see more.”
A lot of good news has come my way lately, but I've been keeping this next thing secret for so long and I can finally share:
@Tin_House
and NASA will be sending me to the moon to do a reading.
Okay this is the last time I’ll boast but was super cool to see this! Night of the Living Rez is the best reviewed book of the week! Kci woliwoni! So much love and support has been passed my way! Never in a million years did I expect this.

So super happy and grateful to learn NIGHT OF THE LIVING REZ is a finalist for Maine Literary Awards Book Award for Fiction! Congrats to the other two finalists as well, SOFT FEATURES by
@gillian_burnes
and LUNGFISH by Meghan Gilliss (
@CatapultStory
)
Super cool! My editor passed this along. Map of where my book is selling. The dark blue means more copies sold! Gotta tackle those blank states/areas somehow…
Our gwusis (little boy) has RSV 😞. Positive vibes are welcome! He was able to get relief from urgent care, but I don’t want to see him so sick and prefer to see him like this when he is better:
I'm overjoyed at the news that Night of the Living Rez is shortlisted for the new
@BNBuzz
Discover Prize! Kci woliwoni, and congrats to the other writers as well!!!!
So cool to be around so many book sellers and writers! Excited to be a finalist for the New England Book Award! They had Maine as a tag but needed exact representation so I improvised.
Rejection sucks. Really it does. But I got a super nice rejection from the very tippy top of The New Yorker asking for more. It will always be a long shot with them, but maybe one day!
I could not be more grateful and happy about this and working with
@andothertweets
! Huge thanks to my team for making this happen!
“And Other Stories has acquired a three-book deal with Morgan Talty in a "unprecedented" sum for the publisher following a four-way auction”…
Crazy that Night of the Living Rez has been out for exactly one year. It’s been an incredible one at that. Thank you everyone for reading and supporting me! Be on the lookout for summer 2024 for my debut novel, FIRE, EXIT (
@Tin_House
)
You might spend days or weeks or months or years writing terribly. As frustrating as that may be, it is not time wasted. Those words are feet marching you to the destination that is the story meant to be told, the story wanting to be told. Keep going.
I’m very confused, disturbed, and frustrated about
@smithsonian
cancelling the Asian American Literary Festival. This feels like silencing against a group who has continually been silenced and oppressed by the US since it’s very early formation.
Thank you
@nytimesbooks
and
@amil
for this wonderful review of Night of the Living Rez! Still in disbelief the book is reviewed in print! Kci woliwoni!!
Undergraduates and graduate students in creative writing, what would you think of a 15 week course where each week was dedicated to reading and talking about a different literary magazine and all the work they published in that issue?
