Lots of great things happening with our juniors and, off the blue tees (7001 yards), Josh began his weekend with an eagle and posted brilliant rounds of 72-75 on a bouncy course and in tricky conditions

New putting green update
We have now completed the build phase of the new practice putting facility - over 400 tonnes of stone, rootzone and various sublayers are now in place lifting the green by a metre and growing its size by some 25 per cent. 1/6
The New 1st Tee
The club wanted to address this at the same time as the new putting green. We had the chance to level the existing main tee as well as extending the championship tee to link up with the putting green. We've also levelled the ladies' tee and added a new winter tee.
Designer Clyde Johnson on the new bunker behind the 18th green
Most of the work weโve done is inspired by what used to be there. We spent a lot of time searching through the club history book and thereโs a brilliant old aerial which has inspired the bunker behind the 18th. 1/4
Sir Nick Faldo won twice in Leeds at the Car Care Plan International...
The first at Sand Moor, 40 years ago, and then here at Moortown the following year. Pre his swing rebuild the
26-year-old came from two behind with four to play to beat local star Howard Clark by a shot
The next step in our course development plan will see work on the 15th over the winter with Clyde Johnson
The fairway bunkers now in place will be removed and there will be more emphasis on the playing angle of the hole as Dr Alister MacKenzie had intended
(Aerial 1948)
To celebrate the opening Major of the season we're offering visitors the chance to play both Moortown and Alwoodley for ยฃ195 per person
Two GB&I Top 100 courses and two classic Dr Alister MacKenzie's designs

First weekend of action for the redesigned 15th hole - great to be back on the green ๐ค

Weโre delighted to team up with the fantastic West Lancs GC, the 9th oldest club in England and one of the very best in GB & I
1929 Ryder Cup, Moortown
The matches were played in late April and, on the Wednesday, a blizzard swept in and covered the course in an inch of snow.
To their credit the Americans played on to acclimatise themselves while the British returned to Harrogate to use the baths..
Designer Clyde Johnson on the changes to the short par 4 ๐งต
โAs an historical aerial showed, the original intention was to reward the golfer who could hook one against the camber to leave an open angle to the green, which was protected by a large, artful bunker to its right.
Not often seen angle of one of Moortown's more underrated holes
Blind tee shot, bouncy fairway, brilliant bunkers, proper heathland, Stroke Index 2, plenty of pin positions โ
all-round brilliant hole
Two views from behind the 9th green..
How Dr Alister MacKenzie described it in 1929: 'When the flag is placed on the right of the green, as it ought to be for matchplay, it is desirable to go for this gap (off the tee) so as to obtain a clear run in for one's second'
Moortown are at No. 68 in Golf Monthlyโs new UK and Ireland Top 100
One over-riding aspect of this or any Top 100 is the absolute quality, and variety, of all these courses - Moortown are sandwiched between Rye, Cruden Bay, Machrihanish, West Hill, Ballyliffin and The Island ๐
Huge congratulations to all our juniors after topping Division 1 of the Leeds & District Union Junior League for the first time in the clubโs history
A real team effort with everyone playing and contributing
Well done to all the teams (and organisers/supporters) involved ๐๐

Itโs National Thank A Greenkeeper Day
In all weathers, at all hours and making our courses what they are - lots going on at Moortown at the moment and in the coming years and weโre lucky to have a brilliant team of greenkeepers behind it all ๐
The 9th
Another of maybe one of Moortown's more underrated holes which can be stretched to 473 yards off the very back tees..
Fairway bunkers and a ditch are the hole's main defences off the tee before a long iron (for most of us) to an angled green. One of the tougher SI 7s
Looking forward to welcoming the England and France teams for a practice day ahead of the weekendโs matches
Course looking in incredible shape and forecast similarly perfect
โThe move to Moortown was the highlight of my career, Iโve had 20 great years and Iโm looking forward to a few more before hanging up my spikesโ

A Week In The Life Of The 1929 Ryder Cup
Monday April 22
One of the great side stories was the one of Ernest Hargreaves who was a 16-year-old clothing factory worker from Leeds and a Moortown caddy. He would spend the week on Walter Hagen's bag โ and there was even more to come..
A rarely seen photo of the old clubhouse on its opening in 1910 with Open champions James Braid and Harry Vardon to the right of Alister MacKenzie
The clubhouse was originally located beyond the present 11th green before being abandoned in 1915 when the new clubhouse was built
A Week In The Life Of The 1929 Ryder Cup
Friday April 19
Having met for lunch at the Savoy on the Wednesday the two teams went their separate ways โ the hosts to Harrogate, where they would make use of the Royal Baths, while the Americans would head south to the links of Kent.
โThe primary goal is to enlarge the putting green, by building the new green on top of the existing one, and connecting it to an expanded back tee which will simplify the 1st tee experience and encourage better growthโ
Our upcoming putting green changes
โWe had to identify nine different grasses, they made it as hard as possible there was no chance of fluking anythingโ
We profile Moortown greenkeeper Jake Rose who was the runner-up at the Young Student Greenskeeper of the Year Awards

Itโs been a long (and very wet) winter for the

- and all greenkeepers up and down the UK
Thanks to them weโll have a new putting green, extended 1st tee and redesigned 15th hole in the near future
And the clocks move in two days ๐

On this day in 1929 GB beat the US in the first Ryder Cup on British soil
There is a story that George Duncan, from the comfort of the gentsโ toilets, overheard Walter Hagen tell a US player that it was a certain point given that the captains had arranged to play each other.
The Stewart Laws Junior Trophy
Our juniors continue to miss the support of Stewart who sadly died earlier this year. Stewart was a very popular member for 46 years and he was a true stalwart, overseeing the juniors for 13 years and supporting the club on countless occasions.
