We are using too much deep sedation, typically without physician order - light sedation that accepts some discomfort allows for early mobilization and gives the patient the chance to recover to independent living after surgery and critical illness

No overshooting actions in patients who receive the wonderful GLP-1 RA. Don’t stop this blood sugar control medication preoperatively- do not expose your patients to food restrictions which lead to unhappiness and case cancellations. Please read. https://t.co/lrsK9sSriN

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, deep sedation has become more common in ICUs. But new evidence suggests this practice may be doing more harm than good, reducing patients’ chances of returning to independent living. ➡️ @MonteEinstAnest @MatthiasEikerm1 https://t.co/h6PxthwEUK

NEW: Deep sedation, often used in ICUs to ease distress, can impair movement, sleep, and recovery, leading to worse long-term outcomes. @MonteEinstAnest researchers, led by @MatthiasEikerm1, find that symptom-focused care with non-opioid medications supports better recovery.

@MontefioreNYC @ASALifeline @EinsteinMed "New research...shows that in a cohort of more than 10,000 people, patients who received a high proportion of deep sedation while mechanically ventilated had a greater risk of adverse discharge compared to patients who did not receive deep sedation." 📰 https://t.co/4AQxxDDMK2

Favorite rotations: "Cardiac & Pain. Cardiac is when we get to see the most interesting surgeries-from valve replacements to lung transplants. Pain rotation is a change of pace. Watching different outpatient procedures & seeing the patients return with improvement is satisfying."
