This brings me to the end of the thread. As a geographer & educator it was interesting to see these processes in action. Esp the different impacts emigration has on urban & rural spaces. This is really something that should be looked at more within KS4/KS5 geog curriculums (12)

This means that the variation in the place identity me and my husband had over Sylhet will slowly change. Many UK born Sylheti’s will begin to know it as only an urban place. As people will visit Sylhet and stay in the city and have no reason to visit the rural areas (11)

This has led to a new wave of investment in urban areas. Where those who have sold their rural land and moved abroad, will purchase properties in urban areas to rent as holiday homes. Enabling them to have a place to stay when visiting and the money to maintain it (10)

The bittersweet element is that within a few generations I will lose my tangible connection to rural Sylhet. My mums family have sold their plot of land as they now all live abroad & have no one to maintain it. A home that held so much history & meaning no longer accessible (9).

In the city that level of oneness was there in a different form. People connecting around food stalls and new openings of hotels and cafes. They also have this amazing talent of identifying us abroad born Bangladeshis and are great sales people (8)

When visiting the small amounts of family I had in rural areas. It was evident there was still a variation of wealth & poverty yet there was a community feeling & sense oneness. Families with wealth would provide food, shelter, safety & employment to those living in poverty (7)

I stayed with my in-laws while visiting and fell in love with the vibrancy of the city. Informal economy is the backbone of this city and when we went it happened to be that KFC was having its grand opening. The first global food chain in Sylhet (6)
