Whitney first had success on black charts, her debut album took MONTHS to perform well in pop markets. Her second album faced backlash for having pop success without needing to "cross over” from Rnb. History and charts show Whitney is an RnB singer who became succesful in pop.
For much of the '80s, Whitney Houston wasted her prodigious vocal gift on bullshit fluff not befitting her enormous talent. I know there's been some revisionist history on that era since her tragic death, but there's a reason she was booed at the Soul Train Awards.

In a 1986 interview Whitney said, she picked music that could be enjoyed by young people. Whitney had an ear for pop hits. If she had sung music like Miki Howard or Regina Belle, (Miki’s debut was partially presented to Whitney) her career might have taken a similar path.

In the same interview, she said her team and fiancé encouraged her to return to tennis, bc "was not even thinking about it.” . To the larger point, yes, unless you're top 50ish in tennis, many players struggle to survive on their earnings and rely on benefits like the rest of us.
Venus Williams came back to tennis because she needed health insurance. I just learned that she has Sjögren's syndrome and fibroids which both impact her ability to play tennis. MY GOAT still made history as the oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA tour since 2004.
