Real-time monitoring of biological changes in #Antarctica is extremely difficult to achieve, but necessary to understand ecosystem responses to cyclic and long-term climate shifts. Read about how we’re tackling this problem 👇🏼 Led by @DanaMBergstrom Jane Wasley @Antarcticmoss.
One of a planned 20-strong network of Antarctic observing towers, bristling with environmental sensors, is being built to monitor environmental & biological variability & change in old-growth moss beds & other biodiversity sites. More👉📷 K. Randall

By the time sea ice/snow melts & life returns to Antarctica each summer, the ozone hole is usually on its way to closing. But recently it’s extended well into summer and coincided with heatwaves and low sea ice extent, leaving plants & animals exposed to unseasonably high UV.

A landscape that appears still, but is very much in motion. A network of #glaciers dissect the #Transantarctic mountains near #CapeAdare . Ice shuffles down mountains to form large #crevasse fields. The central glacier shown here is over 25km wide!
