My book is now out in paperback! It is a comparative perspective on early cities, from a social-science perspective (population, economics, politics). I cover both top-down & bottom-up influences on urban life. 29 case studies, and many illustrations. https://t.co/q5kJ7fD0vY

Kino is such a good boy that they named a school and an aquatic center after him!

Its hard to get my head around Washington and Oregon being in the Big 10, or ASU in the Big 12.

Go Huskies! I always like it when my grandpa's football teams wins. It was more than 100 years ago that he played end for the Huskies. He had a bunch of awards and memorabilia (including a game ball, UW vs. Cal), but my uncle donated them to UW.
My grandpas 1914 high school football team. He’s at the left end, first row. He went on to play for the Washington Huskies, before and after WW1.

5/5 Teotihuacan certainly looks more impressive than Otumba. But Otumba was an economic powerhouse in the economy of the Basin of Mexico, and its rural look today made it possible for Deb Nichols and Tom Charlton to take systematic samples of surface artifacts.

When we look at the population of each city, to calculate workshops per capita, Teotihuacan is not all that special. In fact, the Aztec city of Otumba really stands out. Yes, economists are probably rolling their eyes here, OF COURSE one should look at per capita figures. 2/

🧵1/ Why do archaeologists need to calculate the population of settlements? I'm working on a paper on this. Here is just one example. Ken Hirth assembled data on the numbers of craft workshops at Mesoamerican cities. Wow, Teotihuacan looks special, no? But wait..... @asuteolab

One of those emails where I ask myself why I bother writing a critical review of a bad manuscript, if it is just going to be accepted anyways, showing that I have different scholarly standards than many of my colleagues. Sigh.

The talk is called, "Urban relocation as an adaptation strategy in the ancient world". We had hoped for feedback, but got almost none. We'll see what reviewers think of the article......... You can also check out my article here:

Me: it’s your birthday, Kino. What do you want to do? Kino: you know the answer to that. Me: OK, do you want to go chase a ball at the park? Kino: Woof!

Democratic leaders’ refusal to confront corporate power, expand the Court or seriously defend voting rights helped clear the path for Trump — and breaking their grip on the party is essential to stopping a slide into autocracy. https://t.co/1BVGNyYj6Q

Saving the US from autocracy means recognizing and overcoming the chokehold that Democratic leaders have on the party.

Weird mining installation - Does anyone know what this cone-shaped metal thing is? Its probably related to mining. Located just east of the tunnel on the north side of U.S. 60 between Superior and Globe, AZ (Globe is an area of heavy copper mining).

After a long two days in the car, Kino is enjoying a nap at home. Maybe he is dreaming of the cute female dog he met at a bar in Eau Claire. Wait, hanging out in bars was not on the agenda of the doggy camp! I need to talk to the management about this. @heathercolleen3

Kino is getting tired of travel. We drove to Wisconsin for Kino to attend doggy sleep away camp while we went to Aarhus for 6 weeks. Then we drove back to AZ. After a few days we drove to Texas to deal with in-laws stuff. Kino doesn’t like Texas rest stops. On the way home here.
