A year ago I was sitting on close to 70 rejections after 8 months of querying, most of them form. I did a TON of revising. And here I am a year later with a 5-book deal & my 2nd book about to publish on Sept. 1. Things can change in a blink. Don't give up!
I'm beyond thrilled to announce that I've signed a 5-book deal with
@FutureHousePub
for my YA science fantasy series The Talismans of Teregrin. I'm so grateful to FHP & excited for the opportunity to share Gemma & Oliver's full adventure. Thanks to everyone who's supported me!
I don't mind being the underdog. I don't have an agent or a 6-figure advance, but I do have a 5-book deal with a small press that's allowing me to share these books that have my ❤️. I may not have an 🧡 banner on Amazon, but I'm not going to stop trying to get 1!😆
Note to self:
Stop comparing your writing/publishing journey to everyone else's. Stay the course. Put in the work. Do everything you know to do, & you'll get there too. Someday.
You're not gonna believe this, but I was reading over my husband's shoulder last night, & there's this whole other part of Twitter where people DON'T talk about writing & books all the time. I'm just... mystified.🤯😯
Got my first rejection that wasn't a form letter, with actual specific feedback. That's progress from last time, I guess. Now to figure out what to do with it.
What a feeling! To finally hold my book... relief, shock, awe, & unexpected waves of imposter syndrome (IYKYK, lol). But it's here! It's real!
If you read it, I'd love to get some more reviews on Amazon/Goodreads, even if they're not 5⭐. I can take it. I promise.🥰
I always thought I'd bawl my eyes out if I ever got good querying news. In reality, it did such a number on me that all I could do was stare at it, catatonic, for a good 5 minutes.
NGL, the rejection I got last night from the person who had my whole MS stung more than the others. But when I told my husband this morning, he said, "Keep writing!"
So, that's what I'm gonna do.
#amquerying
Please forgive me for tracking my GR giveaway. But the fact that over 2k people have asked for my small press book that got zero agent requests in the trenches feels like a big deal!
To the person who keeps submitting the contact form on my author website so that I'll promote your oven mitts...What exactly is your thought process? I may write about fantasy worlds, but you're clearly living in one.
It's pub day for my debut YA science fantasy The Talismans of Teregrin! If you like adventure, mystery, magic, & romance check it out. The ebook is now available (still waiting for the paperback to go up).
Is there anything more intimidating than seeing "gorgeous writing" on an agent's mswl? I mean, I believe in my work & all, but who in our imposter-syndrome-ridden crew sees that & goes, "Yes, 💯 that's me"?
What if, instead of saying "It only takes one," we said, "It only took __ months, __ manuscripts, & __ drafts to get an agent/deal"? Or am I the only one who finds that more motivational?
It only took me 12 months, 1 MS, & 17 drafts to get my deal.
If you're pitching in
#SFFpit
Thursday please don't hang all your hopes on getting likes. There's so much value in it even if you don't. I've made some of my best writing friends in pitch events. Hasn't gotten me out of the trenches yet, but it is helping me survive them.
I'm officially a 2-book author! The 2nd book in my YA urban fantasy series is OUT TODAY. If you like action, adventure, mystery, magic, & romance check them out:
You all would NOT believe the querying whiplash I've experienced in the last 48 hrs. But, to my surprise, I think I need to bow out of
#IWSGPit
. Thank you to everyone who supported me today. I can't begin to express what your support means to me.🥰
2023:
February: Signed 5-book deal
June: Book 1 published
September: Book 2 published
December: Finishing Book 3 edits
It's been one hell of a good year!😁
Sitting in the waiting room at my kid's appointment, & another mom asks what I'm working on. I tell her about my books, & she buys the 1st one on the spot. True story! 🥹
If I sleep with my query letter under my pillow, will that entice the query fairy to bring me good news? Haven't heard a peep in about 3 weeks, & I'd love to wake up to a full request!😜
A friend & I are getting some hate on signing with small presses. So, if you're a small press author, can you share some love for your press in the comments/QRT? I'll go first:
@FutureHousePub
is an amazing, supportive, author friendly team, & I'm honored to work with them.
Just got the most complimentary response to a query a person can possibly receive without getting a full request. Do you know what this means? I'm finally, FINALLY, on the right track!
#amquerying
Highlights from the last 24 hours:
-My Goodreads Giveaway ended with 4k+ entrants
-My book broke 50 reviews on Amazon
-My books will FINALLY be available in physical stores
All of this in one day after weeks/months of struggling. It's gonna be a good day!😁
Gotta love the personalized rejections where the feedback would be so ridiculously easy to incorporate that the reason for the rejection doesn't even make sense.🙄
Did I just write 5 sentences in my WIP on my phone so I could say I didn't completely flake out on it today? Why, yes. Yes, I did.
*Small achievement five🖐️
Looks like we're a week out from
#pitdark
, so time to start prepping. Who else is pitching? Leave me a comment if you want to swap support, & I'll add you to my list!
@Robinov14
I don't know how old you are, but I know it's: "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?"😉
Read a small press book this week that kept me up for 3 nights. Opened a bestseller last night & fell asleep in 2 minutes. Clout doesn't always account for taste, I guess.🙃
Handcuffed, tattooed, & abandoned in a lab, 17yo twins Gemma & Oliver escape onto an isolated island only to find their fellow teen experiments turning into monsters. Unless they can control their new powers & get off the island, a similar fate awaits them.

No matter what happens with this book, I'm so glad I queried it. Going through this process really pushed me to make it the best it could be. I'm sure there are people who don't need that kick in the pants, but my book wouldn't be the same without it.

A huge THANKS to everyone for the support in
#SFFpit
today. I had so much fun interacting with the huge list of pitches I signed up for...& got a little frazzled hunting for unpinned ones (you know who you are!).
My 1st ever agent ❤️ was the cherry on top!
I won't be pitching in
#moodpitch
, but I love seeing the mood boards and reading all the fascinating pitches. If you'd like a boost, leave me a comment and I'll put you on my list. 🙂
I guess I was hoping the feedback on the full wouldn't be on something non-negotiable. But I know my story, & I'm not changing it for a vision that sells it short.
I got 23 LIKES today!👀
From other writers, lol. But seriously, thanks for all the love & support today, everyone! It was a lot of fun sending support out too. Thanks
@JasonHuebinger
& everyone involved!
I did get 1 legit ❤️, so I'm happy.
I was gonna wait till Thursday, but since everyone else is getting a jump on it, I will too, haha. If you're pitching in
#moodpitch
& want to swap support, leave me a comment. I'll add you to my list!
Sorry, I can't wait. 😂

Did I already get into the celebratory ice cream? Yes. But hear me out. When you've worked for months or years on a book, pub day really should be a week -long celebration. Don't you think?
My author copies for The Firebreather's Curse finally arrived! If you like YA dystopian blends of science fiction and fantasy, check out my series. Links are in my bio.😁
So, it looks like there are a couple pitch events I can do this month:
#iwsgpit
on the 25th &
#KidLitPit
on the 26th. Who wants to swap support? Let me know which one/both in the comments so I can add you to my list!
For anyone who's interested & hasn't been having a fun time in the trenches, here's my blooper reel. It's a little embarrassing, but I learned a lot. And I hope some of you will find encouragement in my experiences.
In my experience, other writers have been some of the MOST supportive & empathetic people out there. Why? Because we spend most of our time in other people's heads. 🥰
1 year ago today...
I drove home from a sad appt, & my kid puked all over my backseat.
I called my mom to vent that I never got good pub news to offset bad days.
I found an email saying my book was in review by a small press.
2 days later, I had an offer.
And everything changed.
I can understand people mixing up there, their, & they're...but I get irrationally bothered by someone writing "loose" instead of "lose." Anyone else with writing pet peeves?

So... what's the protocol if you get a like from a small press that you already queried with your full MS & they rejected you because they couldn't connect to the premise? I'm seriously stumped here.
A student I taught 6 years ago tracked me down on SM to tell me I was her favorite teacher and apparently gave some assignment that led to her future career. I'm just...🥹🥹🥹
I know I haven't been very active on here lately. One of my little guys has been in the hospital for over a week, & that's made it difficult to be here. I'll check in when I can, but that's definitely been getting to me.
Got my first comment on my website blog from someone asking if there was any way they could read my book because the description was so intriguing! This after being told on my last rejection that they "couldn't connect to my premise." Boo-yah! 😜
Think I'm gonna take the long weekend off from querying. No researching subs or prepping materials. Might even avoid my email. Just going to do some catch-up writing in my WIP & go back at it on Tuesday.
#amwriting
After a rough
#amquerying
week, it's hard not to get my hopes up when I get some interest. Do agents/editors put as much stock in "it only takes 1" as writers do? Would help if they did.
If you wanna do a real "writer's lift," find a writer whose book you honestly want to read & TELL them. You don't have to be an agent to make their day. IDK how many comments during pitch events are genuine, so getting 1 outside an event means a lot.🥰
If you want to be a great beta, find the heartbeat of the book and make suggestions that will take it over the top. Building on the author's vision is one of the best supports you can offer.❤️
As someone who queried a series, can I be real? Don't call your book a standalone w/series potential unless it's true. Not ending on a cliffhanger doesn't = standalone. I was lucky to find a home for mine w/a small press, but querying agents w/it was abysmal.
One of the coolest things about having a beta reader is getting to see what a reader is thinking & feeling about the story in real time...& when it's everything you intended, that's the best!😍
When you have to hold it together and not go down because you're Mom and everyone else is counting on you to take care of them...but you have no idea what to do.😭😭😭
I care less about the views and more about the people I normally interact with vanishing from my feed. I'm all for meeting new people, but 10 tweets in a row from the same new person? No thanks.
I love how subjective writing is, that what might not appeal to 1 person is another's favorite type of read. But the whole querying part would be easier if you could, in fact, please everyone.
