To answer the “it’s summer!” brigade
40C is NOT normal for the UK
25C by night is NOT normal
UK infrastructure’s not built for it
Heatwaves are among the most dangerous of natural hazards
Heat records are becoming more frequent
7 out of 10 hottest UK days have been since 2003
🌡️Record heat and possibly the first 40C day🥵
I never thought this would be possible so soon
⚠️Big impacts to health, travel and power possible

More award winning research from the Daily Mail.
There are only 12 (TWELVE) national presenters on the books now, 5 being part-time …covering ALL BBC outlets on TV/Radio/Online/Social 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.
Careless research or agenda driven? 🤷🏼♂️
Here in the UK our days get 'longer' again in little under a month🎉
In Tromsø (Norway) however ...
- Only 28mins of daylight today
- Sun sets at 11:45am
- Next sunrise 11:30am 15th January 2019. That's 48 days without the sun!!
This was during their only daylight yesterday🤦♂️
🌡️Record heat and possibly the first 40C day🥵
I never thought this would be possible so soon

25 years ago today a young Matt walked into
@metoffice
HQ in Bracknell for an interview.
It was was about to change my life in more ways than I could ever imagine
(Luckily I got to keep my suit jacket on and the interview team didn’t see the new Ribena stain on my shirt🙈😂)
Morning! 👋🏻
First of all a HUGE thank you to the docs & nurses
@EmergencyStoke
who along with assistance from
@GreatOrmondSt
made one of my daughters well again and got her back home 🙏🏼
However, that does mean I am back on your tele this morning. Sorry!
Good morning! 🌅
A great honour for me to be back
@RAFConingsby
, where I first became a weather forecaster. I’ll be with the
@RAFBBMF
and Typhoon squadrons ahead of
#TonyGotAFlypast
on
@BBCBreakfast
. This gorgeous Dakota plays a starring role. ...weather permitting!🤞🏻
All I’ve wanted to do all day is head up the M6 to see my mum for the first time in 3 months and give her a hug ...it’s her birthday.
Yet I feel very churlish just thinking it when tens of thousands of families have lost hugs with a loved one forever. They need the hugs more😞
We say 👋🏻 to my
@BBCBreakfast
twin
@mrdanwalker
tomorrow 🙃
From walking behind Rory McIlroy on the 1st hole at the British Open, to fish & chips in Llandudno, waking him with a tea in Enniskillen & video messages during Strictly
Kind. Generous. Fun!
I’ll miss you fella🥺
With
@BBCSimonMcCoy
deserting us all after today 😢 and taking his cheekiness with him, this exchange with
@WeatherNick
had to be shared again 😂😂 🐐 🐐
Good luck Simon, we’ll miss the laughs
Hi
@GBNEWS
@thecoastguy
,
Fancy correcting your misleading claim that the forecast temps were “obtained using satellite to gain the ground temperature”
What absolute nonsense! Not and never been the case
48.2C in Sardinia yesterday (A Europe July record) was the air temp too
‘People are being manipulated by fear of the summer.'
Neil Oliver calls on people to ‘turn their backs’ on media reports regarding extreme weather after the BBC sent their climate editor on a gas-guzzling trip to Spain to cover the ongoing heatwave.
Morning! 👋🏻
Here’s actual footage of me walking into work this morning, knowing that’s the last of the five 3am alarm calls done for this week.
I’ve your weekend forecast on
@BBCBreakfast
from 6am
As a kid, I was obsessed with weather and wanted to be a proper weather forecaster.
20 years ago today I joined
@metoffice
...and I’m still working in the subject I love. It’s taken a lot of hard work, but ...
Follow your dreams kids!

🤫 Don’t tell anyone, but I **may** have already snuck up onto the balcony and high kicked my way down the spiral staircase in the new studio for the News at 6️⃣&🔟 😬
I’m forecasting …
🧐periods of reflection
😢occasional tears
😅spells of laughter, and
💕downpours of affection
…as we say goodbye to this wonderful lady 👋🏻

@Hopenlesmyth
You're welcome! I think as you've proved, & as I tell my daughters- for every bully, there are hundreds more that care...they are who matter
Hey guys …you’ve done it!
It’s the
#WinterSolstice
this evening
As from tomorrow, daylength increases every day until late June 🙌🏻
(Sunrise starts getting EARLIER from next week)
Can’t believe folk have stooped so low as to abuse
@mikebreakfast
...he works his flippin socks off every single week to learn the dances from scratch. For what it’s worth both my girls (competent ballroom dancers) rated him technically better - that’s the point of a dance-off 🙌🏻
I didn't think it was possible to feel sick, be on the brink of a heart attack, and then euphoric in the space of 30 seconds
#ENGCOL
Now if we can just stay away from extra time and penalties
@england
from here on my heart will really appreciate it. Many thanks
When hill-climbing became just a bit too much for Bert 🙄
(To be fair …I had to carry him over a stile that was almost too high for my little legs, never mind his)
Note to self ...
Charlie isn’t always trying to make me do something silly, like sing, on air (hence my response)
AND MORE IMPORTANTLY
Make sure you check who is on the programme after you 🙈🙈🙈
Evening 👋🏻
I’m not working this Christmas (for once 😁) and as I’m in the pub playing darts you’ll have to do with a pic of Bert instead
Merry Christmas all, but esp those of you who are missing a friend/family member this year …and those working too. Thank you! X
Good Friday morning all 👋🏻
Here’s a sight to lift your morning …some of the most spectacular
#AuroraBorealis
seen in our skies for years 😍😍
@BBCBreakfast
I promise I’ll stop the dog spam, but it appears Bert has been handing out the cuddles again this morning at home🤗
Maybe there’s a business opportunity out there for him on cold mornings like today🤔😅
#rentaBert
Social distancing and being on shift with
@carolkirkwood
sucks!
We’re all about the hugs 🤗
Anyway ...good morning all. Both of us send you a massive virtual hug to get your Monday underway x
10yrs ago next week I received a call - my wife had gone into labour with our 1st child 8 weeks early ...60miles away.
Today, after only starting running in Feb, Mrs T is running her 1st 1/2 marathon
@RoyalParksHalf
for
@Blisscharity
- who supported us.
I’m immensely proud
Seeing this before bed last night wound me up a treat.
London’s R-rate is 0.8-1.1 and growth rate possibly rising again (govt figures from Friday), which to me, makes this look like a collective spit in the face of the health workers we have applauded😔
Thanks for all the messages today. Sorry I’ve not had any time to respond individually. You’re all great!
Today was not about me though - it was for other colleagues in weather and climate who’ve had it far worse recently
They do an amazing job. They are passionate. They care
**BREAKING NEWS**
The sunshine has been located! CCTV footage from last week reveals that our
@carolkirkwood
had accidentally packed it in her bag when she left. She's dispatched it back and it will be making appearances across the UK at times today & this weekend!
@bbcbreakfast
The real reason you’ve got a bank holiday today …
Happy birthday to my amazing friend
@carolkirkwood
🎂
Make sure you celebrate her 28th birthday in style 🎉
The polar night in Tromsø, Norway is over!
The sun (technically) peeked above the horizon today, for the first time since the 27 November, for a massive …17 minutes 42 seconds! 🌄
Tomorrow it’ll be up for 1hr 6mins.
Snowy time-lapse from The Arctic University of Norway
Just to lighten the timeline a bit
…here’s Bert keeping cool under a chilled towel 😊
After two of the longest and busiest days of my career, I’m off home for a hug / borrow the towel 😉
Stay cool all
Happy birthday us
@bbcweather
!
70 years ago today the first presented TV weather forecast aired.
This week is also my 20th year in the best job in the world. A fair bit has changed in terms of technology …and style 😬
Very personal posts are rare, but..
I got whooping cough as a child (medically I wasn’t allowed the vaccination)
Beyond doubt the worst experience of my life. I still carry the mental scars of being unable to breath today. It’s not just a cough! Protect your kids if you can
With reasonably clear skies across the UK later this evening, you may be able to view the partial
#LunarEclipse
.
Maximum eclipse in London is at 22:30, with the partial eclipse ending around midnight 🌒

After raiding the BBC archives I’ve found my first day on

Enjoy more blasts from the past tomorrow morning, as Breakfast celebrates 4️⃣0️⃣ years 🎉 🎂
I and the rest of the BBC Weather team are devastated by the death of
@DianneOxberry
A ball of fun, warmth and energy, I laughed every time I saw/spoke to her over the last 17yrs.
My thoughts are with her young family
On this day in 1998 I walked into the Met Office College in Shinfield Park to embark on a new career and train as a weather observer🌤️⛈️🌨️
25 years later I still work in the field I love. Thanks for being part of it!
#25YearsInWeather
Bill was the ultimate professional. He had right levels of authority, warmth and humour that made him a hit with everyone at home watching …and a pleasure to work with.
Thoughts are with his family 😞
Former BBC Breakfast presenter Bill Turnbull has died. He was 66.
He was loved by our viewers. He was loved by his colleagues.
Bill will always be remembered for his warmth, humour and being a brilliant journalist.
After a tough week for some in Shetland, there was a bit of a celestial treat last night
WeatherWatcher 'Sean' braved the cold to capture aurora AND the milky way, above a snow covered landscape😍
On this day in 1998 I walked into the
@metoffice
College at Shinfield Park to begin my weather observer training with this lot. It was a risk at the time.
24 years later, I’m back on
@BBCBreakfast
, the UK’s most watched breakfast show, again.
No regrets
#LoveWeather
It maybe the closest we can get to a hug ...but it’s always a joy to share my morning with
@carolkirkwood
! 🤗
And we have the entire ground floor of Broadcasting House to ourselves too
#whenthecatsaway
😈😂
My 9yr old daughter has taken to the pencils again. Recognise anyone
@TVNaga01
? 🧐
I’ll be back with both of them on
@BBCBreakfast
from 6am🥰
Want to know how cold it’ll get later this
#Easter
and who may see snow ❄️? I’ll have all the chilly details
The sun set in Tromsø, Norway today at 11:51am, but it won't rise now until 15 January.
For others in the Arctic Circle the wait for sunrise will be even longer!
Now that our sunrise 🌅 times are getting earlier, the length of daylight each day will begin to accelerate.
By the end of the month we will all have just over an hours worth of extra daylight compared to now! 👌🏻
#FridayFeeling
@BBCBreakfast
Morning!
Best day of the year today - no politics/election talk is allowed on the TV/radio until polling stations close at 10pm 🙌🏻
To celebrate, here’s some otters enjoying recent snowfall in Buffalo Zoo
21 years ago today I realised my childhood dream as I walked into
@metoffice
College in Shinfield Park to start weather observer training ahead of a posting to RAFC Cranwell.
Worked with many amazing people. I know we don’t always get it right, but as a profession we strive to!
Out of this world! Spain is a winter wonderland right now. Bitterly cold after historic snow.
Cencellada, Albacete 🇪🇸 -16.5 °C

@mariomiranda_es
Well that was a day I won’t forget in a hurry.
Cheers for the messages, laughter and general kindness ...especially
@rickastley
! Least I can do is give you the link to his single - all in aid of Children in Need👇🏻
I’m off to check who’s on
@BBCBreakfast
tomorrow😬
Night all
Excited to announce I’ve teamed up with the BBC Unsung Hero awards. The 2019 Unsung Heroes & I have re-recorded my song Every One of Us & 100% of net profits go to Children in Need. Nominate your Unsung Hero & enjoy the single here
As someone who had a serious case of whooping cough as a child, 50 minutes on the train home wearing a face mask is a mentally unpleasant experience 😷 So it angers me greatly to see folk get on/off without one 😡
😂 Here’s a man who knows how to celebrate. Well done to our
@OwainWynEvans
who I believe made a fabulous debut on
@BBCBreakfast
yesterday. He’ll be back next Saturday too 🥂
Thank you for so much for the lovely messages today dahlings. I’m having a quiet night in with Cleaner Turner who doubles up as a fabulous beverage delivery system 🍸 Have a dazzling Saturday night! ✨
To all the mums out there
To all those who’ve not seen their mum in a year
But especially to those of you whose mum is no longer with you, except in your heart
