The castle is part of a larger city wall that runs around part of the city as well.

"I will certainly go." Moment that made Richard one of the greatest heroes of all time.
In 1192, Richard the Lionheart was preparing to leave the Holy Land. Then came a messenger with news that Saladin had attacked Jaffa and that only the citadel remained with the defenders hoping against hope for rescue. Richardβs response? βI will certainly go!β [Thread]π§΅

Counterpoint: I'm currently writing a 1,700-year global history, and it would simply NOT be possible w/o utilizing a legion of these sort of obscure, niche publications that "no one will ever read." Au contraire, I'm reading them right now!
It's rather strange that one of the core activities of academiaβand, as far as I know, this is true across all its branchesβhas become the writing of texts that no one will ever read.

It's not my favorite time or place of medieval history but late medieval France goes aesthetically harder than pure titanium

A look at the buildings. Interesting style. They have a Vauban museum, "Musee Vauban" (3rd pic)

@MemoryMedieval I can confirm it was a fascinating conversation that revealed the subtle genius of military logistics back when even the transportation could get tired, frightened, or keel over! A warhorse π https://t.co/KmJWHiE28Q
