At this masterclass I am delivering today at EdTech Society, we will take a look at how technologies of the past have shaped society—sometimes for the better, sometimes for worse and how we can learn from those examples and steer AI towards the collective good of humanity.

What determines whether a technology uplifts or disrupts? The question has never been more urgent. As AI evolves at an unprecedented pace, the choices we make carry greater weight than ever before. The future isn’t just about what AI can do, but what we choose to do with it.

There are hardly any conversations happening around this right now. So, this was my attempt to start one. Curious to know what you think.

We need to enable underserved children in learning cutting-edge technologies at a semantic level so that they are better equipped - to leverage those for their contexts, to quickly adapt to the cascading innovations.& most importantly, to develop a lens to critically evaluate.

The technological hegemony does not just amplify but rather automates inequality. This is one of the most urgent issues of our time. If we don't want the underserved population to become 'a useless class' as Harari calls it, we need to give them the technological prowess.

The lack of cultural capital, the digital divide & the sheer speed of the AI revolution puts marginalized communities at a risk of entirely losing their economic and political bargaining power, let alone allowing them to find their representation in the new power structure.

But now, it changes completely with AI. When an Artificial Intelligence has a knowledgebase of all the humans combined and is able to perform a wide range of tasks, power centralizes in the hands of few, who control technology. A technological hegemony emerges.

Digitization of knowledge in the last two decades changed this significantly and the bargaining power was reduced. It did not go away completely though thanks to the democratization effect of the digitization.
