Tony was a huge influence on me, both as an economist and as a person. He was a rare combination of an incredible intellect, a kind heart and a generous spirit. The epitome of a gentleman, in the best possible sense.
Its with great sadness that we (@EconUniKent ) announce that Tony Thirlwall died yesterday after a long illness. He was a great and influential economist, a valued colleague and a kind and generous man- Rest in peace

Great thread from Harvey here for those looking to understand what’s going on with UK labour market
Last week the ONS suspended publication of the labour force survey. Today's Monetary Policy Report sets out how Bank staff, in the absence of those statistics, take a combined steer from a wide range of indicators to form a view on the labour market. 1/8 https://t.co/HZLCbaG4iO

School students who underestimate their position in distribution of ability are less ambitious in college applications; high ability girls & disadvantaged kids are most likely to be under confident; informing them encourages applications to top unis, @CamilleTerrier1 @CEP_LSE

I’m always acutely aware that if I had been born 100 years earlier, I wouldn’t have lived past 27. Continued innovation in diabetes treatment means I’m not only alive, but I’m able to live a (pretty) normal life! Thank you to all those leading the charge! @JDRFUK @Diabetescouk
In 1922, a group of scientists went to the Toronto General Hospital where diabetic children were kept in wards. Most of them were comatose & dying from diabetic keto-acidosis. Others were being placed on extremely strict diets, which inevitably led to starvation.

Fantastic report. You’ve got to fix the pipeline to have a sustainably diverse future for the profession. And that diverse future benefits everyone.

Assuming talent is distributed equally and not biased by class, then think of all the potential academic talent we’re missing!

As a working class (quasi) academic who has tried writing for a popular audience, a lot of this resonates. Most important aspect of all this though is that most people get turned off the academic path before they even start, as it’s “not for us”.

Intereresting projection exercise by @RichmondFed on the demand for reserves, factors that may shift it over time and the limit it implies on QT ⬇️
Great reading about the reduction of the balance, the minimum level of reserves and the uncertainty about the evolution of some liabilities of the Fed. @RichmondFed @aRishisays

Anyone know a decent open mic night?! Or songs relevant to economics? (Preferably with 3 chords) @EconomicsinTen - I bet you guys know a few! Thanks to Nathan for the lovely write up. I used to read InQuire all the time as a student.
'Jack does not look like your archetypal economist. His friendly and easy-going manner bares the resemblance of a musician at a local open mic night.' InQuire student newspaper's Nathan Collins-Cope writes on the return of alumnus @MeaningJack. https://t.co/ztuoqIoCQt
