This is my 48th year covering the NFL in Houston. I do weekly sports talk shows in Houston, Nashville, Knoxville, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Austin and Waco.
Isn’t it amazing how many chances teams have given Antonio Brown despite his problems on and off the field and nobody had the guts to give Colin Kaepernick a job.
Bill O'Brien's decision to call a fake punt on fourth and 4 at his 31 with a 24-7 lead midway through the second quarter will go down as one of the worst in playoff history if the Texans blow this game as they're trying so hard to do.
The most moving experience I’ve had was visiting Normandy, walking down and up Omaha Beach and spending two more hours at the cemetery where so many Americans are buried. God bless my father and grandfather who served their country during World War I and II.
I'm not surprised JJ Watt's paying 4 the funerals 4 the victims of the shootings at Santa Fe High School. Ever since he got to Houston in 2011, Watt has been doing so many things in the community to help others,, including raising more than $37 million 4 Hurricane Harvey relief.
I’m closing in on 4 1/2 decades covering the NFL for the Chronicle. At the start of every season, I feel like a rookie again. I’ve been truly blessed - 48 years in the business and 45 at the Chron. It’s a privilege to do what I do!
The Texans should put
@JJWatt
in their Ring of Honor at their first game next season, joining Bob McNair and Andre Johnson. Johnson and Watt are the greatest players in franchise history.
Today I’m starting my 46th year at the Chronicle. Counting 3 years at the Waco Tribune Herald this is my 49th year as a sportswriter. I think I’ve got a couple of years left in me. I’ve been blessed. My first training camp with the Oilers was 1977, the year Tom Brady was born.
I don't care who the Texans hire as GM, but I hope they hire Eric Bieniemy as Bill O'Brien's replacement. I think Bieniemy would do a terrific job with Deshaun Watson and the offense.
Firing Easterby is one of the best decisions in the history of Houston sports. If the McNair family wants to make another great decision that'll be met with 100 percent approval, they should bring Andre Johnson back into the organization. He was Easterby's most outspoken critic.
The Rams-Lions trade will have nothing to do with a Watson trade if the Texans do it. They'll want 2 ones, 2 twos and 2 young defensive starters, at the least. Watson, 25, under contract, great QB, team leader, beloved by fans, pillar of the community. Start with the Jets.
The Texans have agreed to sign Case Keenum to a two-year contract as their backup QB behind the second overall pick in the draft. The deal can't become official until the start of free agency on Wednesday.
DeMeco Ryans is going to reunite the Texans’ fan base. With Ryans and a franchise QB with the second overall pick, the Texans will be relevant again. Can’t wait!
Easterby spent too much time leaking Texans stories to his favorites in the media, which earned him a lot of enemies. Then he denied leaking stories to the McNair family. Good riddance!
Texans had a deal with Detroit for the 90th pick but Lions backed out at last instant and Bill O’Brien was furious. You could tell by his reaction on TV. They selected OLB Jonathan Greenard with their pick.
What an incredible Christmas present! Just learned I’m one of four of Baylor’s 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award winners! I’m so proud. Of all the alums around the world. I just wish my mom and dad were here to share this experience with me!
Today begins my 44th year at The Chronicle. I’d like to thank my bosses for letting me hang around and cover the NFL. It’s the best job I could have. Thanks to the 6 radio stations where I do weekly shows, especially Sports Radio 610 in Houston and 104.5 The Zone in Nashville!
I’ve covered more than 40 drafts. This was my favorite by far. Congrats to Roger Goodell, ESPN, the NFL Network, the players and, most of all, the IT guys behind the scenes. A terrific job.
That's the coolest Zoom I've been on: Watson bawling like a baby while his mother, family members, Dabo, Verlander, HS coach and a kid he met from Make A Wish all congratulated him. No way you don't feel good for a young man on a monumental day like this for him and his family!
DeMeco Ryans is interviewing with the Texans today. I'm biased because I covered him for six years and have stayed in touch. One of the nicest, smartest, most talented, hard-working players I've had the pleasure of knowing. I hope he hits a home run. He's the people's choice.
Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker was recommended to XFL commish Oliver Luck by his son, Andrew. Walker spent 2 seasons on Colts practice squad. Andrew told his Pop, “Dad, you’ve got to sign him. He can play!” Threw 4 TD passes in opening victory over LA. Maybe Andrew should be a scout!
When Jack Easterby was interim GM, he signed Josh McCown to the practice squad because the Texans needed a third QB. Smart move. But to interview a guy who's never coached, even though he may become a great coach at some point, for a head coaching job is preposterous!
Never in my wildest imagination did I believe DeMeco Ryans could lead the Texans to a winning record and be in position to finish 10-7 and earn a division title or a playoff berth in his first season. NEVER, EVER! It's been flabbergasting what Ryans has achieved.
I’ve been watching the Astros since their first season in 1962, and I’ve never seen a more dramatic moment and a louder crowd. They were beaten, and they came back from the dead.
I'm an idiot. I said all season no way the Texans win at Cincinnati. But they did, 30-27, ending the Bengals four-game winning streak. Yes, I am an idiot.
In all my decades of covering the NFL, I've never met a coach, player or administrator I respected more than Gary Kubiak. He played and coached with so much class and dignity. I've been privileged to know him since the late 70s. I've never known a better man in or out of football
If I'm a QB, I want to play for Seattle and throw to Metcalf, Lockett and Fant and hand the ball to Penny, who averaged 132 yards rushing over his last 5 games.
This collapse is on Dusty Baker. Should have pulled Verlander before he blew the 5-0 lead and let the Phillies tie it. A terrible two innings by Verlander. Bad decision by Baker.
Astros may lose Verlander after World Series but they need to bring back Gurriel. After a terrible season at the plate, he’s been outstanding in the playoffs.
Texans fans should be ashamed selling so many tickets to Denver fans. The lower level at NRG Stadium is packed with orange-clad fans. It's an embarrassment for a team that's been so good and exciting with DeMeco Ryans and CJ Stroud -- a downright embarrassment!
I’ve never seen an Oilers or Texans head coach do a more impressive job at his introductory news conference than DeMeco Ryans is doing right now. He’s captivating everyone with his enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and immediate goals.”
Astros are making me look like an idiot, which isn’t hard to do. When they were down 3-0, I tweeted to get the fork out of the drawer and the broom out of the closet. I’m a moron!
I won't be surprised if this is Romeo Crennel's last game as DC. He turns 73 and I can see him retiring after six years with the Texans. One of the all-time great defensive coaches and one hell of a guy.
Today is my 31st anniversary. Happy Anniversary to my wonderful wife, Carol. She's in Maryland and I'm in Arizona. Oh, well, it's 31, so what the heck? We'll celebrate when we get home this weekend.
Bob McNair fought a long and courageous battle with multiple forms of skin cancer. His son Cal, the Texans’ vice chairman, had been running the franchise with his dad. The team is in good hands with Cal.
Some Eagles fans have lit up a few joints right under us, and we can smell it in the pressbox. I may need some Cheetos after the game. Nobody celebrates like Philly fans. Fly Eagles Fly!
I’ve been a Baylor basketball fan since I was an 8 year old Cub Scout. That was 61 years ago. Tonight is a dream come true for every Baylor fan who lived thru the pre-Scott Drew nightmare with Dave Bliss. Sic ‘Em Bears!
I miss my mom and dad so much on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! They loved this time of the year so much. I wish Santa could bring them back long enough for me to tell them how much I miss them one more time!
What a class thing for Texans to do. They reserved a seat for Dave Campbell, who died Friday night, at Seattle game. Founder of Texas Football and 40 year SE at Waco Tribune-Herald. A big thank you to team President Greg Grissom!
CJ Stroud has thrown for 470 yards and 5 TDs without an INT and has a rating of 147.8. This is one of the greatest performances I've ever covered. He had no kicker in the second half and a running game that gained 53 yards. Amazing performance by Stroud and the passing game.
I’ve been one lucky SOB to have covered the NFL for more than four decades. My first visit to Lambeau Field was 1980. It never gets old coming here. It’s the best stadium with the nicest fans in the NFL. It’s also awe-inspiring at 12:30 AM! And it’s always a privilege!
Since I attended my first Astros game in 1962 when I was 10, I've always wondered what it would be like to throw out the first pitch. I'm going to find out June 12 when they've invited me to throw out the first pitch! I'm honored. It's a dream come true! Thank you, Astros!
A Veterans Day story to share with you: When Kenny Stabler played for the Oilers, he didn't show for practice one day. Everyone was frantic. He returned the next day. When I asked him where he'd been, he said, "Yesterday was Veterans Day. I'm a veteran, so I took the day off."
I've got to hand it to Watson's agent, David Mulugheta. He was shrewd enough to get a no-trade clause in Watson's 4-year, $156 million extension. Then he gets a 5-year, $230 mil deal with the Browns, fully guaranteed, according to

Think of the clients he's going to get.
