Meet Ruby! We rescued her yesterday from Basset Rescue Across Texas. She was terribly abused and is scared of her shadow, men and loud noises. With lots of love, good food, treats and patience we know she will blossom into a confident dog. We love you, Ruby! 😘

Trauma, triggers & the teenage years. 😳 It’s a phase, but boy is it extra challenging. More stubborn. More startles. More fears. More adjustments needed to hubby. Yes, the couch video was nice. But it set her back! So we regroup. Back to basics. Love, structure & time❤️‍🩹

🏆 9 1/2 months and this! 🏆 This is such a shocking event in our home with Ruby. Never has she ever sat on the couch w/hubby. After 12 nervous tours around our loveseat she finally decided she would jump up. No audio. Didn’t want to change the room energy. HUGE!! ❤️‍🩹🙌🏻

Ruby’s face is not telling the whole story. Don’t let this look fool you. She took food treats today from a new man in the house. A first! 🤯 She was free to leave. Anytime. But stayed. I think she knows she’s super cute when she uses her eyes for some love. 💕 ❤️‍🩹

Operation Tail Wag also includes a snuffle mat that holds her dinner. Sniffing for 10 minutes chills the brain. So does a full tummy! Perfect for easing her fears & vigilance during the 5-7pm “bad man” triggers. Hasn’t erased the flight/freeze patterns, but has eased them❤️‍🩹

Ruby Recovery Update: This might not look like it, but this is a win. This rescue nugget is learning, not perfectly, to regulate herself in triggered moments. She used to dart. And this is at the start of 5-7pm “bad man” window! She stayed! And soon played outside with hubby!

🎊9 month GOTCHA day🎊 Our sweet little rescue nugget has been safe now for 9 months. No bad man ever again. From splooting to howling in 30 seconds, her kingdom is outdoors! Her ANS is chill, relaxed and in charge. So nice to see. Indoors? She’ll get there. ❤️‍🩹 Go Ruby!🐾

Many of you know the stacked trigger event that set this little nugget far back in her recovery from abuse. Early Sept we were worried. End of Sept we are hopeful. This is a very good sign she’s regulating her ANS. New man? “Don’t like it but I’m still here, not fleeing”

Operation Tail Wag is a success! This howl exhibit is during 5-7pm. The bad man’s “bad time” with this sweet rescue nugget. We are seeing consistent memory exchanges during this time frame. Not fully relaxed but much better during 5-7p. Outdoor is always a win! ❤️‍🩹 Go Ruby!

Hubby is home now and Ruby is an interesting case study. Initial response to seeing him? Slow tail wag & happy trot. A win. More nervous inside again but letting him approach her & pet her on the couch. A win. He loves this silly creature & she’ll love him soon❤️‍🩹 #🫐budget

Ruby is Director of the “Toy Management System” in our house. A fun back and forth game we all enjoy. And with hubby gone for a few days, a more relaxed Ruby appears. As you can see. Some day Ruby WILL believe she can trust this good man. No more bad man ❤️‍🩹🐾🐾❤️‍🩹

The reality of an abused dog. Part 2. Emotional whiplash for the humans. In the midst of unexplained setbacks and unknown triggers, she shows us this side once again. “Don’t give up on me”.. she seems to be saying. Relax sweet little rescue nugget. You’re safe always. ❤️‍🩹

Today seems to be a day where I am unhappy with the “bad man” who created such fear in our sweet little rescue nugget. Unhappy isn’t the right word. Seething is better. His actions have created a somewhat chronic state of hypervigilance w/hubby & indoors But we are hopeful
