What we are watching is the arson of our government. As I see it, those of us with the capacity to help—both individuals and organizations—have two options:

It should be unacceptable in the greatest country on earth that our elected leaders can’t meet their most basic responsibility of keeping our government open and working for the public. My full statement here.

This is now the longest shutdown in history, and our nation will be experiencing long-term damages for years to come, in addition to the real and frightening immediate harms.

One by one, Trump has undercut and weakened each in pursuit of unrestrained power. The weakening of these guardrails is the weakening of our democracy. Read more in my piece for The Contrarian. https://t.co/lT6EegieEh

The Office of Special Counsel, agency inspectors general, judge advocates general and the Merit Systems Protection Board might not be household names, but the backbone of our democratic system runs through them.

Our recent research finds that nearly half of Americans are already noticing the shutdown’s impact. Leaders in Congress have an obligation to come back into session and end this crisis by reopening the government before these harms multiply further for the public.

Career federal employees, both military and civilian, should not bear the brunt of this dereliction of duty. The Shutdown Fairness Act partially remedies the financial harms for some federal workers but ought to apply to all public servants.

For the past 22 days, federal workers and their families have faced financial uncertainty and hardship because our elected officials have failed in their most basic responsibility of passing appropriations on time to keep our government running.

By dismissing those providing data contrary to the president's preferred narrative, we do not just lose civil servants committed to the public good—we lose the principle of fact-based governance itself.

The loss of data has been extensive, and the consequences will be devastating to everything from Social Security to climate change.

Good policy decisions require good information and public servants who speak truth to power, factors that are critically important given the significant consequences of government action.

Information that has been relied on for decades to make critical economic, scientific and public safety decisions has been disappearing—scrubbed from government websites or no longer collected because it doesn't conform to the administration's views.

What really happens during a government shutdown? ASP spoke with @MaxStier from @PublicService about how shutdowns affect everyday government services — like air travel, food safety, and national security.

Congress failed to pass a resolution to fund the government, triggering a shutdown. Our political leaders are elected to serve the public, and by failing to keep the government open and working they are failing to uphold that central promise to the American people.

NEW - Hundreds of former federal workers at GSA are being asked to come back to work. They were part of the workforce cuts through the #DOGE blitz earlier this year. GSA says it's 'making adjustments in the best interest' of agencies and taxpayers. @SpectrumNewsDC

When our elected officials use government services and federal workers as pawns in political fights, it’s the public that pays the price. The American people deserve much better.

We are already witnessing the significant impacts of arbitrary personnel cuts and threatening more through a shutdown would compound the grievous harm and have grave consequences for the American people.

The Trump administration’s attempt to use a potential government shutdown to continue its misguided and damaging efforts to eviscerate the federal workforce is the equivalent of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Leaders in Congress and the White House are elected to serve the public. Shutting down our government would be a profound failure of that responsibility.

The system that envisioned separation of powers is now seeing separation by party. Are we watching our government being fully eaten up by the competition between teams? More in @politico here.
