🚨 New paper 🚨. We conducted a mixed methods study to test whether a position and various interface nudges can facilitate the selection of current affairs news over other genres .

New achievement unlocked: Reviewer complaining that we phrase our results to negatively and should not downplay them as much (context is internal vs external experimental validity and what conclusions can be drawn).

Second, in contrast to the position nudge, interface nudges (see below) only work when they are noticed and appreciated. We find a lot of variation in whether this is the case depending on characteristics of both the nudges and the readers. But they can add value for some.

So what did we learn? First, article position can serve as a powerful nudge. This underscores the importance of reflecting on what editors (and increasingly algorithms) put on top of a news feed / website.

To understand the nudging process in more detail, we then conducted 13 qual. interviews (incl. concurrent think-aloud protocols). Results show that for interface nudges to be effective, they need to be noticed and appreciated. We also find individual variation in nudgeability.

In a repeated measures experiment with N = 580 respondents, we find that prominent article positioning can serve as a powerful nudge. In contrast, interface nudges seem to be much more contingent on whether people notice and appreciate them.

Massive congrats to the new Dr. Draws specifically and to the whole team - led by the brilliant @alisarieg and Tim Draws - for the paper acceptance at #ECIR2024 (I am much more happy about both of these than I look in this picture 😀).

Lucien Heitz closing an interesting session at #NORMalize #RecSys2023 with a short position paper on how to classify normative recommenders. Important to think through the impact of normative operationalisations at different stages of the recommendation process.
