I'm generally in favor of the transfer portal. Players SHOULD have the ability to get out of toxic situations without penalty. But one downside is that it's given players an easy out when they experience hardship: - A lack of early playing time - A disagreement with a coach

Pitchers - Here's what a college coach told me about a pitching prospect a while back: "The velo is there, but he gave up way too many free bases last season. We'll continue to follow his progress." The takeaway: Velo is important, but it's not ALL that matters. You MUST be

Players - If you don't have many options for playing college baseball, one or more of the following likely applies: - Your timing is off - You're targeting the wrong programs - You're not targeting enough programs Send me a DM for guidance.

Something I heard from a D1 coach that has stuck with me: "If a high school player looks like a high school player, he has no shot in our league." Here's my interpretation: The best college baseball players are big, strong, fast, and physically mature. What should you do?

Players - Have at least one phone conversation with EVERY coach who expresses interest, even if you don't think you'll be interested. You may be surprised about what you learn. The information you can gather online only tells part of the story for each program.

Players/Parents - Travel ball can be great for development and CAN benefit your recruiting process, but it's not absolutely necessary. I worked with a player who didn't play travel ball his junior and senior years of high school and still earned five scholarship offers. Do

Here's the stat line for a D1 commit as a HS junior: - .603/.729/1.132 w/ 12 2B, 3 3B, and 6 HR Here's the stat line for another D1 commit as a HS junior: - .315/.430/.462 w/ 8 2B, 4 3B, and 1 HR The lesson: Stats matter, but they don't tell the whole story when it comes to

My thoughts on the TRANSFER PORTAL: The portal does not create LESS opportunities overall… what it does create is a lot of shuffling round and fluid rosters. (If 100 people staying in a hotel all switch rooms, there aren’t less rooms available, it’s just a reshuffling of the

I recently checked out the website of a D2 program who was around .500 last year. They listed a grand total of TWO high school players on their roster! The rest were transfers, including seven from D1 programs. HS Players - Read between the lines here...You need to be open to

Recruiting Trap: "Jimmy just committed to ABC University and I'm better than him. Why aren't they recruiting me?" The comparison game will drive you nuts. Just because Jimmy committed to ABC University doesn't mean ABC University is his best fit. There are SO MANY factors

Players/Parents - If you catch yourself saying/thinking: "I don't have great metrics, but I'm a gamer." Keep in mind: There are players who DO have great metrics that ALSO perform well in games. Those players will naturally get more opportunities, but that doesn't mean
