2/2 This was the first THR to use UHMWPE and marked the crucial turning point in the history of hip surgery, enabling Charnley to operate on the hips that had failed with Teflon. Between ‘62 and ‘68 he did 2500 “LFAs” with no revision

The last incision An absolute honour to be scrubbed up for the last case, with a legend in hip replacement surgery. Thanks for all your support, pearls of wisdom and advise during my fellowship with you. I hope you enjoy every minute of your retirement, it is well deserved

@DominicMarley Interesting signal but potentially a type 1 error. Study is underpowered looking at the 95% confidence intervals and P values. Need more data which considers confounding and potential harms of extended abx.

This day 44 years ago I started my medical career as a pre-registration House Officer at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport . Qualified from Manchester Medical School after six years with no debt. Long hours and poor pay but great support from the ‘Firm’ structure.

Still working in the NHS and am very fortunate to work with fantastic colleagues who delver first class outcomes for our patients but I do fear for the long term sustainability of the workforce without sufficient recognition and financial support from NHS England/DOH

Free accommodation and fantastic Drs mess with great camaraderie. Career progression was uncertain but the rewards of success were considerable. How times have changed for our present generation of FYs
