Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s “A House of Dynamite” is a must see movie. My post detailing a number of post-Cold War nuclear near misses shows how relevant it is. https://t.co/PVPmS0rHd8

No one wants a civilization-destroying nuclear war, but as in 1962’s Cuban missile crisis, both sides may find themselves caught in an escalating spiral that ends with threats becoming grim reality. https://t.co/ruFHYySEO0

Echoing the 1955 Russell-Einstein Manifesto to prevent a nuclear war, I and 33 other computer scientists issued a call to world leaders to “keep a human in the loop” and not allow Autonomous Weapons Systems to act on their own. https://t.co/PYmL90wFzT

A NYT column mistakenly & dangerously says, “If we are unlucky … then the struggles in Ukraine and the Middle East will be retroactively assigned to histories of World War III.” If we are unlucky, there are unlikely to be any histories of World War III.

American foreign policy needs both a better long-term strategy and a lot of short-term Trumpian flexibility.

HOW A NUCLEAR ATTACK ON THE U.S. MIGHT UNFOLD, STEP BY STEP is from the highly respected Federation of American Scientists. Time to wake up!

“Nuclear Roulette” in The Atlantic is excellent. I’ll admit to liking the conclusion: “Most of all, we forget the rule articulated by the mathematician and cryptologist Martin Hellman: that the only way to survive Russian roulette is to stop playing.”

The contours of World War III are visible in numerous conflicts. The president of the United States is not ready.

A good WaPo article on the 1953 CIA Iran coup that overthrew a democratically elected government and installed a police state under the Shah. For why we did that, see my next post.

The U.S. has not publicly called for regime change in the current Israel-Iran conflict, but over 70 years ago, it played a key role in ousting Tehran’s government.

Per my last post, Dick Garwin signed the following call for “rethinking national security” along with former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and others: https://t.co/YQtPqZP65t

When Dick Garwin died yesterday, the world lost a true genius and a great man. And I lost a friend and supporter. See my next post as well.

Many scientists contributed to the final result, but he was the one who, as a young physicist, designed the world’s most powerful weapon. He went on to advise a dozen presidents.

Software Engineering Daily has a podcast interview with me about cryptography, nuclear weapons, climate change, & more. It also explains how my wife and I reclaimed the true love that we felt when we met, but lost in the mess of life.

If we fear something enough, we tend to bring it about. Worse, the article notes, “[Taiwan’s declaring the PRC] a ‘foreign hostile force’ … appeared partly aimed at Taiwanese voters … to recall opposition lawmakers who dominate the legislature.”

President Lai Ching-te is pushing boundaries, risking an angry response from China at a time when it’s not clear whether the United States will step in to help.

Christian Zionists believe that Israel must expand its borders to bring about the Second Coming of Christ. They are a more powerful political force than most people realize.

Some 80 percent of white, evangelical Christians voted for President Trump. Now, some want a policy change that could undermine a future Palestinian state.

(Continuation of previous posts:) As evidence, note that if Crimea and the Donbass had not been part of Ukraine in 2010, Yulia Tymoshenko would have defeated Viktor Yanukovych in the presidential election.

(Continuation of previous post:) "So many working class, EU-skeptic, anti-NATO voters would have made it impossible for the victors of the euromaidan revolution to stay in power.” (continued)

Here’s an interesting take on the origins of the war that had not occurred to me: “Ukraine’s post-2014 political class was unwilling to implement [the Minsk Accords because] they didn’t want the Donbass to return to Ukraine’s body politic. cont’d https://t.co/6V8yd5xPjc

In the 1980s Dorothie and I met Robert Muller, former Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, sometimes known as “the UN philosopher.” His widow, Barbara, just did a wonderful Valentine’s Day interview about our book (link to come). Enjoy—and love! https://t.co/FeV3TYROfy

J Street is “pro-Israel, pro-peace” and I highly recommend subscribing. To be pro-Israel in the long run you have to be pro-peace since Israel cannot maintain military superiority forever. It needs to use this time more wisely.
