I'm looking at Historic European Martial Arts, from manuscripts and trainers to sharp reproductions and antiques.

What is HEMA? I asked an AI and well... As a fan of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate monomer, I am interested in acrylic nail products. ๐คฃ That, or historic swords. I'll flip a coin later to decide on my hobby. Wish me luck! ๐

This post made me look up the artist and then look more into the work of Tomek Kowmal. Polish sabres are beautiful! ๐ https://t.co/5WfCTOneNt

In 1975, the Republican Guard recreated a historically accurate French cavalry charge.

Swiss M1867 sabre. Notice the thumb plate on the grip. Place your ๐ there as you grip the sabre. https://t.co/S6MLzOnTXE

And compare still to tournament conditions. (Angel Chernaev knows his stuff; my point is that the matches are fast and a lot of the art is lost when you have little to lose; a fast explosive attack will pay over carefully mitigating risks) https://t.co/Xm64Alr8KI

Compare that to a nice but safe sparing bout, using an eclectic tradition for sidesword. https://t.co/uzlNXXrhhJ

Training with sharps is an exercise in control. (decade old video by Ilkka Outo) I have to say that when I practice solo forms with sharps, my moves are less lazy, crisp even, and my mind is far more focused on what I'm doing. (no injuries so far) https://t.co/5iu6w1HlHU

Shame that in HEMA a lighter and faster training blade will provide an advantage, especially in tournaments, even when cut moves are performed. And yes, with Agrippa's 1553 manuscript, we have the first codified rapier system, even if simple hilts are still used. 3/3

The blade focus is different. Even with the same weight and PoB, the 1st blade looks focused on the thrust and the 2nd on the cut, especially at the tip. Functionally, one sidesword is a broadsword, and the other sidesword is a rapier. 2/3

These two sideswords with similar hilts are not the same in function! 1st from c.1540, blade 107cm in length and 3.25cm in width, quillon span 18cm, grip length 8.5cm. 2nd from c.1520, blade 94.6cm in length and 3.55cm in width, quillon span 15cm, weight: 1196g, PoB 20cm. 1/3

And I'm not saying Florian Geyer was right. I'm saying it's interesting, and would make for a good movie (even with some though provoking message on taking things too far, if done right)! ๐

1. Beautiful armour and sword, 1500s accurate, used in what looks to be a theatre performance (modern movies should take note ๐ซค). 2. Florian Geyer - please make a movie about him (not how assholes used his legacy later), instead of another insipid remake, sequel or prequel.๐

I saw this basket-hilt with an Andrea Ferrara inscribed blade auctioned online in the UK. For some ยฃ600, I would have considered it, cleaned the rust and blade, blackened the hilt. Final: ยฃ2800 hammer price + 35% fees. Yeah, no!๐
I do like the blade, though. It's quite ideal.๐
