The ML community needs to lay the proper technical groundwork (standards, software, infrastructure) to minimize the downsides and harness the full potential of Universal Interoperability.

This phenomenon, which we name Universal Interoperability, is already starting to happen. It can massively increase interoperability between systems (which improves competition and increases user freedom), but it also adds new security risks and technical debt.

Agents can translate between different APIs (interoperability becomes cheap) and, even if you don't expose an API, they can interact with your website (interoperability becomes unavoidable).

TL;DR: Machine systems are not interoperable due to technical barriers (interoperability is expensive) and economic forces (if you're the industry leader, you don't want to interoperate with your competitors).

The Internet was designed to be open and universal, but it's now dominated by closed, proprietary platforms. Agents will change this by making interoperability cheap and unavoidable. "LLM Agents Are the Antidote to Walled Gardens", a new paper written with @philiptorr! 1/n
