Okay, this is cute. Two pups of one of world's most endangered mammals, the Vancouver Island marmot, tussle. The species, which once numbered fewer than 30 is recovering, but it is still magical to see wild-born pups thriving! Video Adam Taylor

Happy Canada Day from Canada’s marmot! Unique to this country, friendly but surprisingly tough, & knows when to shovel the snow & when to sleep until it melts, the Vancouver Island marmots wish you a Happy Canada Day.

The Marmot Recovery Foundation (that us) leads the on-the-ground effort - breeding and releasing Vancouver Island marmots to the wild, translocating marmots, providing supplemental food, restoring habitat, and monitoring the population. But we could not do it without our partners

On #EndangeredSpeciesDay we want to talk about Canada's most endangered mammal, the Vancouver Island marmot. This uniquely Canadian species is recovering from near extinction thanks to you. From fewer than 30 marmots left in the wild in 2003, to 381 this winter!

Conserving genetic diversity in endangered species is a challenge. The Vancouver Island marmot chromosome level reference genome developed by @CGEnSeq will make it possible for us better conserve genetic diversity, which will improve long term survival of our favorite marmot!.

A bit of wind, a bit of snow, & the Marmot Recovery Centre got a bit buried. This is why marmots hibernate! @MountWashington has a thick blanket for the sleepy marmots! Left photo by Recovery Team Chair Sean Pendergast today. Right for comparison this past summer.

Thank you to our partners and supporters who have made it possible to get to this point. Without you, this species would be extinct today. 👏👏👏 We hope you will celebrate this remarkable year with us and join us on the journey ahead!

And we know that our work is not yet complete. Our mission is to recover the species, and while 2024 has been a milestone year, we have further to go to achieve that goal.
