Finally, the talk will emphasise the importance of the quality and accuracy of data that the AI models are trained on, underscoring the importance of careful AI design and monitoring

At the same time, I will also point to potential threats and challenges of using AI to manage information requests, such as errors occurring in the absence of human oversight, unclear accountability, and privacy concerns.

Through concrete examples, I will illustrate how AI could improve the fair treatment of all requesters and consistency in responses, as well as efficiency, by processing large volumes of requests quickly.

After tracing the historical development of access to information legislation and its diffusion in the 20th century, I will focus on its implementation, which often falls short of its legally mandated obligations.

In my presentation, I will explore how artificial intelligence can improve the implementation of access to information laws, highlighting both opportunities and challenges.

Something to celebrate. Looks like 41 % of UK MPs are women. When I first started researching women’s representation the proportion was about 3 %. It was less that 5 % throughout the 1980s, fewer than 10 % until 1997. Next stop 60%.

However, the lack of transparency of very large online platforms, the increase in disinformation spread, and the political elite's hostile speech towards media and individual journalists pose new challenges and contribute to threats to media freedom.

In recent years, we have observed the risk slowly but steadily increasing. Some are long-standing issues that governments have not addressed, such as the criminalisation of defamation or poor implementation of access to information legislation.

I have had the privilege of working on it for the past four years, focusing on the protection of the rights fundamental to media freedom, such as freedom of expression, right to information, right to internet access, independence of media regulators, and the safety of journalists
